It’s hard to be believed

I’m Julian and I have ADHD. It took me two years of fighting to get a diagnosis because I don’t fit the stereotype of “hyperactive 6 year old.”

Now, I suspect I might also be autistic. I’ve done a lot of research and it looks like a perfect explanation for my other issues that aren’t really a part of ADHD. But I don’t fit the stereotype of an “antisocial autistic person” either.

I’m not at a point where I can get another evaluation, especially if it’s going to be as difficult as last time. But I also don’t want to claim I’m anything I’m not, so I guess I should just try to continue as I have been.

@julianthewriter Welcome! You may want to check out support plus too - ADHD and Autism topics are included there and on 7cups in general there's a number of people who identify as autistic or suspect they have autism. It's unfortunate getting diagnoses is so difficult for those who do want them!

@julianthewriter, it would be nice if we were believed as patients for our word and wasn't so hard to get diagnoses.

@julianthewriter

I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling like you're not really believed and that it took you so long to get a diagnosis. Although ADHD is becoming more known, there is still a long way before people can accept and understand it more. I think it's okay to suspect you may be autistic, but I wouldn't stick too closely to it before you can have the discussion with a professional. In the mean time, it may help to focus more on how to manage living with ADHD whilst working on self care/love. I hope in the future that you're able to speak to a kind professional about these feelings and get some answers. ❤️
