Identifying Feelings
Heya Friends
Identifying feelings is really hard for me. Part of the reason why it's so hard is because I struggle with eating challenges in order to avoid feeling feelings. Part of my personal recovery has been about giving myself permisson to feel things. One thing I try to do is be mindful of the signals my body is telling me. It's a really hard skill for me to work on. I thought I would post some things here that help me identify my feelings instead of pushing them away. I hope you can relate to it too. I'm going to post here in this thread if I catch myself recognizing a feeling and if I let myself actually experience it. It would be cool too if anyone else wants to post your examples here. You can share feeling/emotions resource that helps you out also <3<3<3
Helpful Steps for Dealing with Feelings

Feelings Wheel
Here's a feelings wheel that helps gives me my words on how to name a feeling that I might be having. Sometimes when I struggle to tell people what I am going through I use a feelings wheel to help me communicate it to the people around me. The feelings wheel also helps me when I am writing my feelings down in my journal because I can use different adjectives

Level of Intensity
This chart posted below helps me identify the level of intensity of a feeling it could be low, medium, or high

Using Emojis
Using emojis can help you communicate your feelings if you are having a hard time saying them to someone else. Sometimes I point to emoji cards in order to communicate my feelings when I am struggling

Wow!! This is a super awesome post. Very helpful and informative. Thanks for posting!! @iara—this is a good resource!
I so love this! It's important to identify our emotions and feelings to be able to acknowledge and accept them as part of us being humans!
This is fantastic! Definitely adding it to my bookmarks - I think it will be really helpful in working with members who are struggling to figure out exactly what they are feeling. Thanks for sharing!
@summertimeSamness Nice post Sam!!!
@summertimeSamness
Sam, this post is seriously amazing! Thank you so much for making it, now I can finally figure out how to not say "tired and bored" all the time when people ask me how I'm doing! :P *huggles* This is definitely a resource that I'll be keeping around and handy :3
Thanks for this post - I so needed it!
It sometimes is so hard to identify what exactly I am feeling - I just feel it.
I am def going to come back to this post for help!

@blissedNblessed ...
Yes! I hear you. This is part of the reason I really dislike the Q: How are you? Because I usually genuinely do not know what I am feeling at that moment when someone has just asked me. Second because I want to have a positive answer, but lately have not experienced a whole lot of "excited" or "joyful" etc. and Third, it really depends on who is asking - like how well do I know this person? Someone in line at the amusement park. Someone I see each week at church, but we don't really talk. My neighbor down the hall (I live in an apartment building). My mother (rolls eyes). My dear friend who used to be my roommate but now lives more than 5 states away from me. My closest friend here in my hometown who I prefer to use as an emergency contact instead of my parents! See? Each person would receive probably a different answer, but LOL that depends on my mood! Confusing? Yeah.
Or ......
I will do a lot of anything else in order to attempt to NOT feel whatever it is I'm feeling. Probably because that feeling is uncomfortable in at least one way (if not two or seven or forty-seven!).
But that ^ does not help if I am with a counselor at the time or with my dear close friends who actually DO want to know what I'm feeling or how I am doing with stuff.
All this to say, this is a very helpful post and shall be bookmarked (
@Anomalia ).
I have an extensive list of emotions like one of these above - it has the intensity of the feeling with different words for low, middle, high. I'm not sure if/how I can get it onto 7cups anonymously. I'll check into that.
@the moment - I am feeling grateful. This post is and will be very useful, I think.

Hi I recently lost my best friend, Tim...He was in the shower and suffered a heart attack! I miss him alot... I find myself driving to places we used to go to and just sit and talk for hours, and just sit there and cry when a certain song comes on the radio. I often feel guilty because I'm. Issuing him more than my own sister... Why is that? I could tell Tim anything! No matter what he always complimented me! He only accepted positivity!!!! I fucking miss him deeply!
