Am I Wrong for Wanting my Own Life?

Hey.

Am I Wrong for Wanting my own life?

As the oldest kid my parents are always wanting me to take care of my younger siblings. To the point where I have almost no life outside of my house.

My day consists of waking up, getting ready for school, waking up my siblings, getting them ready for school (which 90% of the time involves some sort of argument with them fighting or them not wanting to do what I say bc they dont want to listen to me bc I don't have authority). Then I go to school. I go pick up my siblings. then they do homework and that normally consists of me arguing with both of them to do their homework and them not doing it and playing game on their computers. then I make dinner and somehow manage to shower and all that stuff in after I clean up the kitchen and do dishes and clean the living room from all the toys from the 2 year old. then I wake up and do it all over again.

and you'd think weekends is break time. no my parents are home and yet I still have to take care of them and my siblings.

its one thing to help but what I'm doing isn't help. I'm so tired but everytime I explain it to my parents they for some reason don't understand and say I'm being selfish.

Hey, Dime. You're not wrong for wanting your own life. ❤️ I'm sorry your parents are putting so much responsibility on you. I can understand how exhausting it must be to go to school and then come home just to take care of your siblings, cook, clean, and argue with them over things that shouldn't all fall on your shoulders. Especially when you don't even get a break on the weekends!

It's one thing to help out around the house and with your siblings, but what you're describing sounds like you're being expected to take on a parental role. You're their sibling, not their parent, and it's okay to want time for yourself, your own interests, and just being a teenager. That doesn't make you selfish.

I can imagine how frustrating it must feel to try to explain to your parents how exhausted you are, only to have them dismiss your feelings and call you selfish. You deserve to have your feelings heard, too.

Can I ask how old you are? And is there anyone in your life, like another family member or a trusted adult at school, who understands what you're going through and might be able to support you?

@Remina

Thank you.

Yes, you may ask.

I'm 17, practically 18 (I turn 18 next week).  I have other parents and friends who understand what I'm going through

You're welcome. Happy early 18th birthday. Will anything change when you turn 18? I am glad to hear that you have other parents and friends who understand what you're going through. What do they think about your situation?

You're absolutely not wrong for that. Your parents seem to be forcing you to pretty much parent their kids, and it is not selfish at all to want to have a life outside of taking care of your siblings.
