First love was a friend
I had a best friend for five years who I grew to love. We were extremely close and she was the first person outside of my family I’ve ever loved. We both struggled with communication, but if there was anyone we could talk to it was each other. I understood her mind better than my own, and I liked the comfort of knowing she would be there if I needed anything. We always did small things that reminded us of our closeness, and we spent hours almost every day together.
We fell out recently and I was completely heartbroken. I was crying every day and it lasted for so long. But it feels like I can’t talk about it and no one will understand because she was just a friend. How can I have gone through heartbreak if I have never been in a relationship? I wish people could be as sympathetic to lost platonic love as lost romantic love.

I can totally relate to this post. I had a falling out with a friend once, and it felt just as strong as the loss of a more intimate relationship. This seemed to be your best friend, a true confidante, and you shared so much time and pieces of your heart with this person. Your grief is valid, and I totally get it. I'm not sure if you have the opportunity to attempt to reconcile with this friend, but I do wish you well on your healing journey.

Just because the relationship wasn’t romantic doesn’t mean you can’t grieve the ending of that friendship. I once had an argument with one of my closest friends. We didn’t speak for several years and I was devastated. We have since made up and are friends again, but it took years of me trying ti reach out to make things right with our friendship.
