Making friends when you’re 30? HELP

I’m 30 and don’t have many friends, even though I’ve lived in the same place my entire life. I work, but my job is primarily remote, and even when I do interact with people in person, many of my coworkers and clients are significantly older than I am.

I have hobbies, but most of them are things I enjoy doing at home, so they don’t give me many opportunities to meet new people. I’m also incredibly shy and socially awkward, which makes putting myself out there even more difficult.

How would you suggest making friends at 30 when you’re no longer in school, don’t regularly meet new people, and are naturally very shy?

@RaisinsRGrapes It is difficult to make friends post 30 and it depends pon various factors. You can focus on making friends with your own gender (more comfortable usually) by striking a casual chat at a coffee shop or a supermarket etc with a fellow coffee drinker/ shopper etc. Small conversations about like "how's your coffee?" "This seems like a great product, any thoughts on this?" etc and slowly move ahead.

I understand where you are coming from. People are so busy and tied up that making friends is difficult. And for someone who is shy, that is more of a challenge. You said that you have hobbies. Do you ever have to go to a shop to buy  your supplies? Perhaps that could be a starting point to meet people with your interest. And definitely online; there are groups for everything. Perhaps you could start meeting people through online forums (relating to your hobbies), and then build up to meeting and outings? Also, do you have any interest in learning a language? There are clubs whereas you can join and meet up for outings in specific restaurants related to the language.  It is good to have options. Good luck on whatever route you choose.

Making friends at 30 can feel difficult especially when working remotely and knowing that you are naturally shy. It makes total sense that doing home-based hobbies and working with a different age group leaves you feeling a bit disconnected. Sometimes it can be helpful to try something small to start, but your comfort level is important 🙂. When you think about maybe taking a step to meet people who share your interests, what feels like the most comfortable setting for you right now? Maybe it can be a group online, or maybe a club. What are some of the hobbies you do at home?
