Self-confidence, social anxiety and filters
I'm very shy when it comes to strangers, or my in-laws and I'm not sure how they would react to what I would say. I'm always scared of saying something rude or dumb, and afterwards feeling embarrassed about it. I always feel like I must filter myself when speaking to people so that I don't say the wrong thing. I'm afraid people will avoid interacting with me like back in high school, if I don't show enough competence, socially speaking.
Can anyone offer advice or experience in this matter?

I am sorry you feel this way .... how to change is up to you. speak up once you do even small ways it becomes easier.
I was like that very early in life... I was not included because by holding back sharing thoughts or feelings in conversations. I was taken advantage of because I would not speak up... for myself or say a strong NO to some things. I had a choice isolate myself and not add to conversation ..... or speak my mind. i chose the second choice.
have i offended some ?... maybe.
Have I misspoke ? sure...
it is normal. High school is no comparison for real life. if those around you act like high school get a better social circle.
This is really reassuring, I'm glad to know you can relate to this, I need to speak up and stop worrying about offending people when being straightforward, so ppl stop treating me like I'm a child. My greatest fear is people will ignore me and not include me.

Speaking up and adding to conversation only had people more interested in me then when i was quiet and off to the side of everything
