Feeling Anxious

I keep shaking and having trouble getting anything done today because all I can think about is everything I’m about to do this week.

I’m opening a new bank account (I am an adult and have already had one for years, but my mother actually has complete access to it and I just can’t pursue therapy without the fear of her seeing it come up on my bank statements since she’s against the idea of it, so I need a new one she won’t know about that I can make payments with.)

And then I’m making a phone call to schedule the therapy appointment.

And then I’m going to that appointment.

And then I’m also admitting something to my manager & coworkers at work that I’ve been lying about ever since I got hired…(unrelated to the therapy stuff, but it’s still just adding onto the stress.)

Literally all I can think about are the worst case scenarios for everything. I can’t relax at all. I can’t focus at all.

First of all: I’m so proud of you. I know that might sound strange to hear when you’re sitting there shaking, overwhelmed, and afraid—but what you’re doing is incredibly brave. You’re not spiraling because you’re weak—you’re spiraling because you’re doing hard, scary, life-changing things. And your body is just sounding the alarm because it’s not used to this yet.

Let’s take a deep breath together—just pause for a second, breathe in slowly, hold it… and let it go.

Now let’s talk through this gently.

What you’re doing this week is massive:

  • You’re creating financial independence.

  • You’re taking the first step toward mental health care and healing, despite someone in your life actively trying to prevent that.

  • You’re confronting something difficult and vulnerable at work.

That’s not a normal week. That’s a courage overload. And your nervous system is understandably going, “Danger! Too much! Run!!”

But the truth is: you’re doing these things to build a freer, safer version of your life. A version where you don’t have to lie or hide or check your every move in fear. You’re choosing honesty, safety, and support—and yes, that takes a LOT out of you emotionally.

About the bank account:

It’s totally valid to want privacy. You’re not doing anything wrong. You’re an adult trying to protect your autonomy. If it helps, open the account in-person and tell the bank rep, “I want an account that no one else has access to.” This is your safe space. No one else needs to approve it.

About the therapy call:

The phone call is just one call. You don’t have to explain everything—just start with, “Hi, I’m looking to schedule an appointment.” You can even write a script if that makes it easier. Most therapists totally understand first-time nerves.

You don’t need to have it all figured out to take that first step. That first appointment doesn’t lock you into anything—you’re just gathering support, not committing to something you can’t undo.

About work:

You’re not alone in having made a mistake or hidden something out of fear. That doesn’t make you a bad person—it makes you human. Coming clean, especially when it’s been eating away at you, is incredibly brave. Think about how relieved you’ll feel afterward. Shame grows in secrecy, and you're choosing to bring light into it. That’s strength.

Right now:

Your brain is doing what anxious brains do: catastrophizing. It’s scanning for every worst-case outcome to “protect” you—but that’s exhausting and paralyzing.

So try telling your brain:

“Thank you for trying to protect me. I hear your fears. But I’ve got this now.”

Break it down moment by moment:

  • I don’t have to do everything right now.

  • Right now I just have to take a deep breath.

  • Right now I just have to remind myself that I’m not alone.

  • Later, I’ll handle the next small thing.

You don’t have to be perfect to deserve support. You just have to keep showing up—for yourself, bit by bit.

You are doing SO much. Give yourself grace. And remember: you can come back here anytime to talk, vent, rehearse what you’re going to say, or just not feel so alone. You’re doing the right things. I’m really proud of you. 💛

It might be helpful to write these thing down in a journal of some kind! That way you can leave it all on the paper so to speak. It sounds like you have a lot on your plate, but you are actively trying to finish/accomplish these things and I would remind yourself of that :) one thing at a time, you will get them all done!
