You could also say adversity is not a detour; it is the path itself.

We often operate under the illusion that life is a straight line and any obstacle is a glitch in the system. But if you look at any great story, or any meaningful achievement, the obstacle is usually the exact thing that forced the necessary growth. Without the resistance, there is no muscle; without the friction, there is no fire.

Finish the sentences:

I didn't plan for...

But it taught me...

@Heather225

I didn't plan for a life of struggle from inherited ankylosing spondylitis (arthritis)

But it taught me the benefits of keeping fit and active to minimise it's impact on my health and a mental resolve that both paid dividends in fighting back from near fatal pulmonary embolisms (blood clots in lungs).

You might see from my earlier post, that a combination of radical acceptance and a lesson learnt well helped me stay calm and act mindfully 😄😄

I didn't plan for being in two relationships when I was young that ended due to addiction issues with both of them. But it taught me to look within myself to see why that happened and put me on the path of self introspection as to why I tolerated what I did. I learned to protect myself better and see the signs, not just of addiction,  but of selfishness, controlling behavior before investing myself in anyone but myself. In a way it was a gift.

@Heather225 I didn't plan to ever fall in love when I was young....

But it taught me the pain of separation, the ability to sympathize and understand just how dark and lonely the world can get and made me find myself again💛

When you cant sleep, its because enemies are too close.

But the only way to level ip, is the very exact direction where the next level enemies are.

I didn't plan for the future.  I never knew what to do with my life.  My C-PTSD has controlled my mind for over half a century and has kept me from making any sensible plans.

But it taught me what?  I'm in therapy and I hope it will help me to get things straight and then I can have a future.  I have no idea what to do for a job or anything.

@WharfRat

I'm considering therapy for a similar reason, I've got PTSD and ADHD and quite simply scared of getting old. Currently aiming to read a couple more books and if convinced start looking for a DBT trained therapist.

Reading your bio has triggered me to spin some Rachmaninoff, it's been a while, I often listen to Modest Mussorgsky. Not struck on the Grateful Dead particulary more of a progressive rock/metal man with some jazz fusion thrown in.

Hope the therapy helps.

@Heather225 I didn't plan for therapy that would push me harder then I was ready for and take me deeper into depression before I could get my feet back under me. But it taught me what going slow means, how to advocate, how to tell if I am going too fast, and how to know what to say when I need to slow down.

@Heather225

I didn't plan for being stuck in the same place without having school or job to go to for almost nine years.

But it taught me about extreme patience, the state of feeling timeless, how to love, the power of nature and outdoors, the power and importance of human connection, and that love is a basic human need. I also started to understand poetry, discovered some nice people and the complexity of human emotions. I discovered the importance of movement, deep breathing, touch, feeling emotions, soothing words, of expressing your voice. How harmful and confining it can be, not being able to express oneself or not even being able to sing.
