How do you stay positive without letting anything break your focus?

I’m really trying to change the way my mind works, but it’s getting hard.

Some days my thoughts get so negative that even small things start affecting me. People come and go, things that once made me happy now feel heavy, and I don’t want to let all this throw me off my path anymore.

So I wanted to ask…

How do you train your mind to stay positive?

How do you stop yourself from getting bothered by everything around you?

How do you keep moving toward your goals even on the days when you feel completely drained?

I’m honestly trying my best, but I feel like I need better ways to handle my thoughts.

If anyone has techniques, habits, or anything that helped you… I’d really appreciate your guidance.

 it’s not a linear process

 give yourself some grace and be kind to yourself first and foremost

 often times if little things are bothering me, there’s something BIGGER that is bothersome

 I’ve also learned, if I’m drained, it’s ok to rest. sometimes that’s what our bodies and minds are looking for.

Journaling, meditation, something you ENJOY, fun, talking it out and has hard as it can be-exercise. Get your body moving.❤️❤️

Most of all, be your own cheerleader with a team here to support you

@peachThinker662 ✨

Thank you so much for taking the time to write all of this… seriously, it means a lot. Your words felt really gentle and grounding, and I genuinely appreciate the tips you shared. 💗

I think I’ve been stuck in this loop where I keep telling myself “I need rest,” but somewhere along the way it turned into me wasting a lot of time and hiding behind my emotional state. And now I’m realizing that blaming everything on how I feel isn’t really helping me grow.

Resting lately hasn’t given me peace at all... it almost feels like it makes me overthink more. But when I take action, even small steps, I feel a little more in control. I just struggle with finding that balance between resting and actually doing what’s good for me.

Your reply kind of reminded me that both matter… I just need to learn how to manage them better. 🤗

Thank you again for your kindness 🍀

 Kudos to you for courageously taking on the rather daunting task of changing thought patterns.

I think there are quite literally millions of books on the subject of positivity and "brain training." So, it becomes a question of where to start addressing the topic.

There are several "feedback loops" involved, such as fatigue that triggers negativity, and negativity that triggers fatigue. If facing a very unappealing task, the mind may tell the body that it's too tired to face the job, then along comes the negativity that would convince you that having to do the job isn't really fair. Low blood sugar, problems with sleep, and something that everyone deals with these days, inordinate stress, along with countless other factors, can trigger negativity.

It may be an issue of too much work, and too little relaxation or recreation.

It might be a self-esteem or confidence issue.

I like what peach Thinker 662 mentioned, that sometimes being bothered by trivial issues, may be an indication that there is something of greater significance seeking mental audience.

Maybe a continuous effort to remain positive can, at least in the short term result in negative feelings.

A therapist once told me, "you must not, under any circumstances, think about monkeys today." Despite my best efforts, thoughts about monkeys persisted for the rest of the day.

If, in the morning, I tell myself not to have negative thoughts, it may have the same effect as "don't think about monkeys."

I think the subconscious is very much a concrete thinker. If I tell myself I'm going to "try" to do something, the subconscious is likely to interpret the word "try" as an indication that success is far from assured. It's a person has a habit of talking about "trying" to do things, they may be programming the subconscious to make its best effort focused on making sure the goal isn't reached.

That's why in the movie "Star Wars," Yoda said, "there is no try, only do or not do." It reminds me of when people call themselves "seekers," I think to myself, I'd rather be a discoverer.

Something to be aware of, is that even when experiencing negative thoughts, it does not mean that you are a negative person. I think there's something to be said for observing thoughts, as though they are passing clouds, and we are free to choose how we regard them or react to them. In short, you are not your thoughts. At depth, you are the light and love that is motivated to counsel your thoughts.

Finally, I seem to have evolved a sense of humor about when I find myself getting irritable. For me, it's a bit like "zooming out" to take in a larger perspective of my situation.

Much of what we witness and experience in life gives plenty of scope for reacting with negative thoughts. I think it's important to acknowledge their presence, and to give thought to how our reaction may help or hinder our ability to function in a way that maintains our well-being. In that sense, acknowledging negative thoughts is a positive thing.

In my opinion, fearing or fighting negative habits and thought patterns, confers upon them undeserved strength. Rather than fear or fight, a better option is to "turn away" from them. It also helps to have alternative things to focus on. For example, when I quit smoking in the 1980s, I took up cross-country skiing. When it comes to thought patterns we'd like to shift, maybe an alternative focus can help, as can some of the other things mentioned above, such as meditation or relaxation.

@Spiritriver 🙌

Thank you so much for taking the time to write all of this… seriously, I didn’t expect such a detailed and thoughtful reply. I really appreciate how clearly you broke things down, especially about the feedback loops and the “don’t think about monkeys” example. It actually made me ...... !! 😭💗

A lot of what you said makes sense… and honestly, I think I do fall into that cycle of trying too hard to “avoid negativity,” and then ending up thinking about it more. And yeah, I use the word “try” a lot too, didn’t even realize how it could affect my mindset.

I’m slowly learning to observe my thoughts instead of fighting them, and your message just gave me a clearer direction to work with.

Thank you again for being so kind and thoughtful, it really means a lot to me. 💜

Thank you for replying 💜

And yeah, I agree… focus does get broken eventually.

But honestly? I barely have any motivation left these days. It’s not that I don’t want to improve… it’s just that I feel mentally tired. Like the fuel tank is empty but I’m still trying to walk anyway.

Even then, I agree with you. Something in me still wants to move, even without the “motivation” feeling. Maybe I just have to rely on discipline and tiny steps instead of waiting for some big push.

I’m trying, just… figuring it out slowly.

Hello @Ailuraphilelove8tear9 (and everyone)!

I have been away from 7Cups dealing with a medical condition, but I’m so grateful to be back online, especially meeting people such as yourself who are interested in having more balance and peace in their lives!

1. A caring and generous community like this helps me to stay positive.

2. Continuing asking for help (as you are doing now) also helps me to keep my focus. I have also asked for very specific support. For example, one time I noticed I was procrastinating on filling out some government forms, so I asked a friend on 7Cups if I could track and report the progress I was making on these multi-part forms. This really helped keep my motivation up.

3. Try to develop a perspective of life that includes openmindedness, plenty of second chances, and non-linear pathways for achievement.

Thank you for asking the question! I hope this helps … tell us how it is going! 🙂

@FaithfulScout

Thank you so much for this… and I’m really glad you’re back on 7Cups. I hope your medical situation is easing up now. It honestly means a lot that you took the time to reply with such kindness. 💗

I really liked the points you shared, especially the part about community support and asking for help in specific ways. I never thought about “reporting progress” to someone as a way to stay motivated, but it actually sounds really helpful.

And yeah, your reminder about open-mindedness and giving ourselves second chances… that hit home for me. Life really isn’t a straight line, even though I keep expecting it to be.

Hugs 💜🤗

As for how I’m doing… I’m not really sure. Things are still a bit messy in my head, and I’m kind of figuring stuff out one tiny step at a time. I just hope things ease up eventually.

Thank you again for such a thoughtful message. It genuinely helped. 💜

I’m so glad I could help … @Ailuraphilelove8tear9 !!

Without realizing it, I tried to live my life as if it was a straight line—and I can’t even count how many times I was disappointed or felt like a failure. It’s great you are developing that awareness now.

Regarding the stuff you’re figuring out, is it about school, work, relationships, family? (Remember, whatever decisions you make, there’s always the chance to revisit it again🙂)

@FaithfulScout

I realized long ago that life isn’t a straight line, but I kept refusing that truth. I complained, dragged myself down, got distracted, and treated myself like trash, no confidence, no self-esteem. But now I want to change everything, one step at a time. I don’t care how long it takes or how many times I fall; I just want to keep moving forward. So yes… finally, I’m on my way now, moving ahead slowly, accepting everything as it is.

Thank you for your support 💗🌸🤗
