How much does appearance actually matter?

To what extent does appearance matter? We often say "personality > looks", but that doesn't mean appearance is completely disregarded. After all, how you look is the first impression you give off. Some people even get bullied for not looking as pretty as others, while sometimes pretty people get "pretty privilege". And if looks are actually not all that important, there wouldn't be so many people feeling insecure about their appearances.

I want to get some ideas on what others might think. You can just share your thoughts or you can rate it on a scale of 1-10, whatever you like :)

@Starlit263 Such a thoughtful question! 🌟 While looks may grab attention initially, it's our personality that builds deeper connections. It’s natural to feel insecure sometimes but remember, beauty is subjective and true confidence shines from within. Besides, everyone’s unique and what really matters is how we treat others and ourselves. In the end, it's the kindness, warmth, and authenticity we bring that leave a lasting impression. ✨

That's so true. Your appearance is just the first impression, but when people actually try and get to know you they will see who you are on the inside. So in a way, spending more time developing those traits instead of worrying about your appearance is probably more valuable ❤️

@Starlit263

Attractive is in eye of beholder....  i think people who feel it matters more ....are just thinking "what do others see?"   i have had 2  serious relationships in my life and both while ok  but were not considered very good looking etc but their heart and personality made them very attractive to me and I did not need arm candy to validate myself.

  privilege also comes with other stereotypes.  Some that seem true as people who are attractive sometimes do not develop other attributes as humor/ personality and such.

Honestly yeah, I agree that people who feel appearances matter a lot might actually be very self conscious about how others view them. Perhaps they think more people will approach them and want to get to know them that way...

It's very nice to hear that you've been with people who had good personalities. That's really valuable. <3

@Starlit263 I would say looks matter a lot. Pretty privilege exists definitely and beauty standards dictate a lot of our attraction psychology. It's much more prominent now in the age of social media. Looks matter even more now compared to 15 years back

Social media is definitely a big part. Many people even treat social media as a means of masking their true selves. They edit their photos, erasing all the blemishes before posting them online. And a lot of people just blindly believe everything they see online and end up feeling insecure about themselves.

And that's what I was saying, right? The first thing people notice about you is your appearance. And most of the time, people only will want to get to know you more if you look pretty decent at least.
