Is it abnormal to see traumatizing things online and forget about them?

In no way do I want to make this about me. *** is a great place for learning about what's happening in Palestine. The things happening are nothing short of horrific and graphic, and it is a world worse for the people on the ground in Gaza who have to experience the genocide of their people first hand. It's heartbreaking and infuriating that it's been so long and nothing has been done. I hope for the safety and peace for the people of Gaza and the West Bank.

I have been posting about Palestine and reposting posts from Journalists and civilians in Gaza every night for more than a month. I've also called my senators and representatives ( I encourage other people to do this as well, they need to hear from us) however, I don't have an appropriate response to the horror I'm seeing Palestinians go through. When im online viewing images and videos of the terrible suffering kids are going through i am sad for them. When I go about my day I feel fine. This is not normal, i don't want to be unempathetic? How do I combat this? And I apologize that I've somehow found a way to make this about me.

@braveVillage6881 I see these things and then they pass out of my attention for awhile till I see them again. I donโ€™t think it is abnormal to forget. It doesnโ€™t mean youโ€™re not empathetic. You have limited agency, but you have expressed your voice, so you are doing what you can. Feeling terrible all day cannot help Palestine or you. And there is no way NOT to make this about you - you cannot experience it any other way. The pain of the people in Palestine isnโ€™t something that can be any different by shaming yourself for somehow not feeling like you think you should. Accept your experience as it is.ย

Thank you this has been helpful. Comforting to know you've felt the same way, and are conscious about Palestine too, there's really power in numbers. Please take care of yourself too.

@braveVillage6881 Your feelings are valid! It is great you care so much and have taken action too! I have been trying to sign some online petitions and stuff too around this issue, although how much that accomplishes, idk

Maybe focus on doing what you can but take breaks and take care of yourself too! Maybe go for a walk or hike outside. You are doing your part and that's all you can do.

Thanks so much for your advice! I'm so glad you're taking action too, what you're doing matters alot, don't worry! As long as you keep talking about Palestine you're doing a great deal ๐Ÿ‘ I know attention has dropped because of holidays and student finals, so it matters alot to engage, so thanks for doing that! I will take your advice and please take care of yourself too.

@braveVillage6881 I dont think you're unempathetic. If we focused all the time about the bad happening to others we won't be able to bring any good in the world. It is important to acknowledge the pain our fellow humans are suffering through, to feel for them and attempt to help them. But it is not needed for us to spend a large part of our day in contemplation, worry, sadness or guilt. It's one of the most important parts of us, that we are able to find life in death, light in darkness. If the people is Palestine focused on their tragedies alone, they would be rendered useless. There is strength in hope. There is strength in acknowlodging pain and moving on. It is not unusual.ย
