What’s the Most Hurtful Thing Someone Has Ever Said to You? Let’s Laugh (and Cry) Together!

Alright, folks, let’s stir things up a bit. I’m calling out those soul-crushing, jaw-dropping, “did they really just say that?” moments—the ones we still think about in the shower 10 years later, plotting our ultimate comeback. What’s the most hurtful thing someone’s ever said to you?

I’ll start, because fair is fair. One time, someone looked me dead in the eyes and said: “You have the personality of an overcooked potato.” AN. OVERCOOKED. POTATO. Like, excuse me?! At least compare me to mashed potatoes or something versatile and comforting. But no, they went straight for the dry, flavorless insult that haunts me to this day.

Or there’s my friend, who once got told by a teacher: “You’re the reason I drink.” The TEACHER. Imagine doing your homework and still being blamed for someone’s Merlot habit.

But here’s the thing—those words hurt then, but now? Now we laugh about them (and also secretly hope karma got those people back). That’s the beauty of sharing these moments: they lose their power over you when you can throw a little humor at them and share them with people who get it.

So, hit me with your stories. Let’s turn this into a group roast of the most ridiculous, hurtful things we’ve ever heard. You can go deep if you want, but even the small, dumb insults count—like that time someone said your new haircut made you look like a “vegetable emoji” (that one hurt a little, not gonna lie).

And hey, if your story is truly wild, I’ll pin it as the Hall of Fame Hurtful Comment. So, let’s hear it: What’s the thing someone said to you that still makes you go, “WOW, okay, thanks for that”? Bonus points if it’s funny, weird, or just downright petty. Let’s keep it light, and maybe—just maybe—we’ll all feel a little better after laughing at the absurdity of it all.

Alright, your turn—don’t leave me hanging! Btw i will post this in another forum just to reach more people.

No one, especially someone you love, should ever make you feel like this. But remember, those words don’t define you—they reflect the speaker’s issues, not your worth.

You are not useless, stupid, or worthless. You have so much value, even if others can’t see it right now. Life is full of ups and downs, but the most important thing is to believe in yourself, even when others don’t. Your worth isn’t based on anyone’s opinion of you, only on how you treat yourself and the love and kindness you bring to the world.❤️

It’s okay to take a step back and protect your peace. You deserve to be surrounded by people who lift you up and see the amazing person you are. Don’t let the negativity of others steal your shine. You’re strong, and you deserve world. ❤️

@brightaday

A few months ago, when I was dating this guy, he told me "I don't want my friends to see me with you." The whole time we were dating I was insecure because he didn't do anything for me, barely any effort, and I expected that he was embarrassed of me. He said, "It's not you, it would be the same way for anyone." New girlfriend and hes not ashamed to be seen with her -- does more than he ever did or wouldve done for me. It's ok to know that she'll probably end up leaving him or the other way around, seeing as thats what theyve both done to their partners.

This man has said a lot of things to me that made me overthink myself and our relationship, but thankfully im slowly getting over it😭loved him a lot and the rls, still pretty scarred from it all though.

People can be so careless with their words and actions, and it’s no surprise that it left you feeling insecure. But hey, let’s take a step back and laugh at the whole situation because the truth is, his loss

It’s like he was auditioning for the “I’m too embarrassed to be seen with you” role, and honestly, I think he failed the audition. Meanwhile, here you are, thriving and slowly but surely moving on. It’s not easy to heal from things like that, but you’re doing it, and that’s something to be proud of!

And as for his new girlfriend, well, let’s just say karma has a funny way of working things out, right? I mean, it’s not about wishing bad things on anyone, but if history repeats itself, at least you’ll be ready with the popcorn for the show.

You loved him, you learned, and now you’re moving on—stronger, wiser, and with way better standards. You’ve got so much greatness ahead of you, and trust me, the next person will know just how lucky they are to be with you. Keep shining, because you’re awesome, and no one should ever make you feel less than that! ✨❤️

It’s tough when communication breaks down like that, especially when it affects your relationship with your child. The whole situation sounds incredibly frustrating, and I can only imagine how hurtful it must feel to be misrepresented in that way.

It’s clear you want the best for your son and that you’re trying to keep things fair and respectful for everyone involved. Unfortunately, sometimes others act in ways that complicate things, even if their intentions aren’t entirely clear.

But don’t lose hope. Kids are incredibly resilient, and with time, understanding, and patience, he’ll come to see the situation for what it is. Try to keep the lines of communication open with him—be the calm and understanding presence he can rely on. And remember, sometimes actions speak louder than words, so just continue showing him love and support.❤️

It’s hard, I know, but try not to let the negative moments define your relationship with him. Keep being the good parent that you are, and things will hopefully turn around. Keep your head up, and don’t let the bumps in the road stop you from being there for your son. You’re doing your best, and that’s what matters most!🙏❤️

@brightaday Merry Christmas! 😁💜

When I was in 9th grade, I learned more advanced physics with some 10th graders at a local high school. But I sort of landed there by accident and I was always worried that I wasn't worthy. Then it was decided that I would go to another high school (senior high starts from 10th grade in my country), and I asked the teacher if he would still teach me. He promised he would as long as I was willing to learn. But then one day we were doing some problems and he went up to me and expressed surprize about how diligently I was working. I was really happy because he never praised me before. But then he said, 'why don't you just go to the other high school?' and he left quickly, leaving the pen trembling in my hand. I was dumbfounded. After a few days I felt I couldn't stay there anymore, so I left. Now even after more than a year, I still had nightmares about him chasing me from the classroom 😂

I guess my best comeback would be to study hard and get into a good university. Then he'll see what student he missed the opportunity of teaching 😁 Still, I'm very thankful to him because he did give me important knowledge and skills.

Merry Christmas!

First off, thank you so much for sharing such a powerful story. I can’t believe that teacher had the audacity to leave you with such a jaw-dropping comment, but hey, maybe he was just jealous of your brilliance! 😜 It sounds like his “surprise” was really about his expectations, not your potential. You clearly have a mind that’s destined for greatness!

But seriously, I can only imagine how those words have stuck with you, but look at the comeback you’ve got brewing! You’re turning his doubt into fuel for your success and what’s better than proving someone wrong with your future achievements? You’re going to crush that university application, and when you do, it’ll be like, “Oh, remember that teacher who told me to leave? Yeah, I’m just over here getting into my dream school… no biggie.” 😂

And trust me, the real win here isn’t just about making him eat his words; it’s about you being so much stronger than what he ever thought you were. You’ve got the resilience, the drive, and the skills, so keep pushing forward! And hey, if you ever bump into him again, maybe give him a little wink and say, “Guess what? You missed the chance to teach me, but I’m still winning.” 😏

You’ve got this, and I’m cheering for you all the way! Keep shining, future university star! 🌟❤️🙌

@brightaday my great grandfather scolded me. He said "You're a slow learner!"

I was 7.

Turns out, I have ADD. So I learn differently, and excel at many things, but lack the organization or confidence to share it with others, without feeling like an imposter.

User Profile: brightaday
brightaday OP December 30th, 2024

That’s a tough thing to hear, and it’s completely understandable how it affected you. But here’s the twist—you are not a slow learner. You just learn in your own unique way, and that’s actually pretty incredible. ADD can bring its challenges, but it also comes with strengths like creativity, out-of-the-box thinking, and the ability to hyper-focus on things you care about.

The imposter syndrome you feel? Totally normal, especially when you’re doing amazing things but can’t always organize or share them the way others might expect. But guess what? The fact that you’ve identified it and are aware of it means you’re already ahead of the game. You’re not an imposter, you’re a person who learns and grows in a way that works best for you.❤️

As for your great grandfather’s comment, well, turns out you’re a pretty fast learner in your own right. Sometimes, the people who don’t understand our path can only see things through their own lens. But you’re on your own journey, and you’re rocking it.

Don’t let that past comment hold you back. Embrace your strengths, your unique learning style, and remember: your worth isn’t determined by how quickly others think you should learn or what methods work best for you. You’ve got this, and the world is waiting for you to shine in your own way! 🌟❤️❤️

Haha, sounds like she was trying to add a little humor to a pretty tough situation! Honestly, it’s great that you didn’t feel offended, sometimes people just don’t know the best way to approach things, but it’s nice to see you roll with it. You both probably just needed a moment of laughter to break the tension, and hey, you handled it like a pro!❤️🙌

If it ever happens again, you could always come back with something like, “Well, I don’t eat much, but I’m still way cooler than the L on your forehead!” 😄 That way, you keep it light and keep the conversation open.

It’s all about balance, keeping the humor, but also making sure you feel heard. And I have no doubt that you’ll continue handling things with a mix of humor and strength. You’re doing great! Keep it up! 🙌

@brightaday I really love this question! It's beautiful (and heartbreaking) to bring these hurtful things out of the shadows.

Here are a few of mine:

1. At my brother's rehearsal dinner for his wedding, my father turned to me and said, "You were so smart, what happened to you?" This was said because I do not have the level of financial success that my father thinks makes a person worthy. Hence, my unworthiness in his eyes. LOL.

2. An ex-best friend of mine once said to me, "You are a traumatized person and you just keep going around and re-traumatizing everyone you meet." Like, what the f***, dude? Did it ever occur to you that I am in pain and hurting your feelings was unintentional? Not malicious.

3. This one haunted me for years....after falling in love with a man years ago, I got up the courage to tell him how I feel. And when asked how he felt about me, he said, "I can't choose you. You are too emotional and unstable." So yeah. as a trauma survivor, I am not the most emotionally stable person on the planet, but I try really hard every day.

Thank you so much for sharing these moments. I can feel the pain in those words, and I just want to remind you how incredibly strong you are for being able to reflect on them with such openness. It’s tough when people we care about make us feel less than we are, but remember, those comments say more about them than they do about you.

It’s hurtful when someone, especially a parent, ties your worth to financial success. The “what happened to you?” comment feels like a dismissal of your value, as if it’s all about what’s in your bank account. But here’s the truth: your worth is far greater than any number on a paycheck. You’re so much more than what anyone else thinks should define you.

That comment from your ex-best friend, that’s really tough. When someone tells you that you’re re-traumatizing others while you’re in pain yourself, it’s like a double punch. The fact is, you’re not out there trying to hurt anyone; you’re just trying to heal. It’s unfortunate when people don’t see that, but what matters is that you know your heart. Keep moving forward, and know that the people who truly matter will see you for who you really are.❤️

And the comment from the man you loved—that one, I’m sure, stung deeply. Being told you’re “too emotional and unstable” when you’re showing vulnerability? That’s his loss. It takes immense courage to open up and be real about your feelings, and anyone who doesn’t understand that doesn’t deserve the space in your life. You’re not unstable, you’re human, and your emotions are part of what makes you beautifully complex. Keep doing the hard work on your own terms, because you’re doing it, and you’re strong.

I know these words have haunted you, but you’re here, still moving forward, still doing your best. You don’t need validation from anyone else to know you are worthy. Breathe deeply and take pride in how far you’ve come. You are enough, just as you are. 🌟❤️🙌

So basically, I met up with freinds once and on the way there I had to walk through a very unpleasant part of town by myself, and there was a group of incredibly imposing and large men (clearly drunk and high) blocking the entirety of this alley I had to walk through, and I could see that one of them was holding a knife. Against my better judgement I had to speedwalk through them to get where I was going and thankfully nothing came from it. Evidently a very uncomfortable experience. I was still pretty shaken when I met up with these freinds, one of them was really lovely and asked me what was wrong, and I explained to them, pretty much word for word how I did just now, and my other freind looks and me and says "oh for f*cks sake, if they were going to r*pe anyone, it wouldn't be you. Look at you, no one would wanna *** that." Who the *** says that??? And I hadn't even mentioned asult of any kind, I just said exactly what the situation was???? What planet do you have to be on to say something like that out of the blue????? Needless to say none of my freind group are freinds with her anymore.

I’m so glad you made it through that really scary situation safely. Walking through a part of town like that, especially alone, sounds terrifying, and your instinct to get through it quickly was probably the best thing to do.

But wow, that comment from your friend? Absolutely out of nowhere. I mean, who says something like that when someone’s just shared a scary experience with them? It’s like they saw an opportunity to be cruel for no reason at all. I’m glad you cut ties with her because clearly, her sense of empathy was somewhere in the Bermuda Triangle, just floating around aimlessly.

It’s wild how people sometimes manage to make the worst comments at the worst times. It’s like, “Oh, I just shared a traumatic experience, and your response is… that?” Not only is it rude, but it’s also pretty insensitive to the situation you were in.

But on the bright side, you clearly have good judgment when it comes to the people you surround yourself with. Losing that friend sounds like a net win for your mental well-being. You don’t need people who bring unnecessary negativity into your life.

And hey, you walked through that situation with your head held high. Who needs rude comments when you’ve got strength like that? Keep shining! ✨❤️🙌
