Natural Ways to Stop Coughs?
I have a deep, barking cough, associated with a current illness and also asthma. What are some natural, gentle ways to stop coughs? No medication, please, just things like gargling with salt water, etc :) Thank you! :)
A humidifier especially in the bedroom can help decrease irritation from mucus membranes becoming too dry. Honey has been shown to be as effective as some of the over the counter cough suppressants in some studies. Steam like running a shower and just sitting in a bathroom can help loosen mucus. I've done all of these.
I've also heard of marshmallow root, but no experience with that.
If you like tea, I’ve found a few herbal teas that seem to help a lot, along with adding honey. Bonus points if you can find honey that’s semi-locally harvested, because that can help with allergies too! I personally really like something with a little spice like a ginger tea if my throat is sore but they make some that are specifically for sore throats too!
@whimsychaser99 Theres also honey wit ginger I got from a local green market sold by da farmers
@jesusredeemedme2425 Hot shower mist might work
@jesusredeemedme2425 what helped me with my asthma attacks was to focus on exhaling. Try to exhale through your mouth deeply for a little bit

oh I’m sick right now and it’s bad I needed this😭I don’t have any but I’m subscribing to this thread this is helpful stuff🩷(I hope you get better <3)
(I didn’t want to be unhelpful so I looked some up😅)
Honey: A spoonful of honey can soothe the throat and is effective at reducing cough. You can mix it into warm tea or hot water with lemon for extra relief.
(I know this one helps)
Ginger: Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties that can relax the airway muscles. You can make ginger tea by boiling fresh ginger slices in water, then adding honey or lemon for taste.
(I’m not sure but it’s pretty similar)
Steam: Inhaling steam can loosen mucus and soothe irritated throats. Try a hot shower or a bowl of hot water with a towel over your head to trap the steam.
(I know this one does too)
Saltwater Gargle: Gargling with warm saltwater can reduce throat irritation and help with cough. Mix about half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water.
(and this)
Peppermint: Peppermint contains menthol, which soothes the throat and can act as a decongestant. Drinking peppermint tea or inhaling peppermint steam may help.
(no clue I haven’t tried it)
Licorice Root Tea: Licorice root has natural anti-inflammatory properties and can soothe the throat. Just make sure to drink it in moderation, as it can affect blood pressure in high amounts.
(I don’t know what that is xD)
Stay Hydrated: Drinking lots of water helps thin mucus, making it easier to expel and reducing irritation.
(definitely helps)
Probiotics: They can help balance gut flora and potentially boost immune responses, which may reduce the frequency of respiratory infections.
(I didn’t know what that was- probably)
I hope you feel better soon <3 I wish I could be more helpful but I’m going through the same thing, I hope we both get better soon xD🩷

@jesusredeemedme2425 highly recommend Bee Propylis (I may have spelled that wrong) it’s a spray for your throat. It’s great for immunity and relief of irritation! Also try some local extra raw honey in some peppermint tea :) prayers that you feel better
