Struggling with overthinking and anxiety in highschool

Hi everyone! I’m a high school senior, and I’ve been struggling with something for a while now that I don’t really know how to explain to people.

It started during my junior year, around March, when I was sick and had a really bad sore throat. I kept swallowing because it helped soothe my throat, but some guys in my class started making fun of me for it. Ever since then, I’ve become extremely aware of swallowing, and it’s been so hard to stop thinking about it.

I constantly notice the saliva building up in my mouth, and I feel like I’m always aware of when I need to swallow. It’s especially frustrating in class because I want to focus on my lessons, but my attention keeps going back to it. Sometimes I worry that other people can hear me swallowing, so I’ve even asked my friends if it’s loud. They tell me it’s not, but I still feel anxious about it.

The weird thing is that when I first wake up, I’m not immediately thinking about swallowing. I usually notice it again after I get up and start my day. I can also become less aware of it when I’m distracted, but it never feels like it completely goes away.

It’s honestly exhausting because swallowing is something that should happen naturally, but now I feel like I’m constantly thinking about it. I’ve come across people talking about somatic OCD and swallowing hyperawareness, and I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar. I’m not trying to diagnose myself; I just want to understand what’s happening to me.

If anyone has gone through something like this, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience and what helped you cope with it. I just want to feel normal again and be able to focus on my life without constantly thinking about swallowing.

@anniebananieee Hi annie! Thank you fo much for sharing this,it can take a lot of effort. I admire you for it <3

I'm so sorry to hear you've been made fun of for something completely normal,it's not your fault. I understand why you can't stop thinking about swallowing now,and you're actually really smart to say that it's something that should happen naturally.

I would feel that way too,it's human...And thinking about somatic OCD or swallowing hyperawareness sounds interesting, your thoughts are really deep. Trying to understand what's happening to you is a giant step,i'm so proud of you for it 💕

What do you think is the best thing you could do about it?

Hi thanks so much for commenting! Sorry for the late reply, I've been swamped with work.😭 Right now I'm just trying out different breathing exercises to focus my mind on other things, it's kindaaa helping! I've been trying to find other people going through a similar situation as me to maybe find some comfort.. I think talking to someone would definitely help😇

Sounds like you started becoming conscious of it when that happened. Those classmates making fun of something as simple as swallowing is not okay.

I can see how much it's affecting your daily life, having your attention always going back to swallowing must be frustrating. And it seems to make you anxious thinking that people close to you might be hearing it, and that must be exhausting.

Are you also pretty self-aware about all of this, you know? You seem to notice it happening less when you are just starting your day or when you are distracted, and it makes sense.

Hope you can find some professional help with this, and hope you can feel better! 💚

Thank you for your comment! Honestly I start to hyperfocus on it as the day starts, it's kinda exhausting😭 I've been trying our breathing techniques and meditation to help also. Sadly I'm not in the position to get professional help as my family doesn't really believe in therapists which sucks! 😥Just hoping it slowly starts getting better with time!💗
