surrounded by people, not alone but still lonely. sometimes i feel like "wow what a wonderful day" but then i remember that we're 'mortals'

Being lonely while surrounded by others what is the disconnect?
nothing in common? how do you know? More often than not... waiting for the other people to start a conversation? Not interested in the conversation can it be turned into something you have interest in?
I used to sit silent then i simply spoke up and made many friends and acquaintances.
