Work problems
Honestly not sure how to do this. I don’t tell people my problems because it makes me feel more ashamed of myself. Here goes
Got a job in a busy office and I have been struggling to get to grips with the amount I have to do. I have been slowly getting trained and there is just always something more to do or I do something completely wrong at every turn. People seem to always be fixing my mistakes or slowed down by me. I felt this sense of inferiority at work. I am slower than everyone and I make massive mistakes. The office can be harsh, people will get on you about mistakes, yell, have words that sort of thing.
Now the person I worked with is leaving, so I will be on my own and responsible for a lot more senior staffs work days going right or wrong. I don’t know how to do so much and speed up for these people. I can’t change jobs for personal reasons and well this one is now dominating my thoughts. My anxiety is constantly on alert that someone will ask me something I don’t know how to do, or I will make another blunder. Worst is my slow pace at tasks. I feel myself slow compared to others and it is tearing my mind to bits trying to force myself to be better.
Anyway I have no clue if I am making sense here or if anyone even reads these things. I am just tired of everything being hard when I just want to be good at something.
Hi @Amp355,
There's no shame in work issues, it sounds like youre going through a frustrating situation. It's okay to talk about it, please don't feel ashamed.
Since you mentioned you're slowly getting trained, maybe I can assume you are new at this particular position? If you are, please don't feel bad. It takes time to get into the pace of things, especially when starting a new job. If you feel you are making many mistakes, I recommend consulting your trainer or even a supervisor to get tips to work more efficiently. It shows that your really care as well as learning how to avoid those mistakes.
I only say this, because I've been where you at a couple times in life, and recently started a new job in something I haven't done before. I usually ask those around me what they suggest in order to become more efficient at my job. I've even made some MAJOR mistakes, but the bosses and owner of the company have been very supportive of me and told me not to worry.
Also, even if you're not new, maybe the job just isn't the right one for you, and that's OK too.
You mentioned that the office can be harsh...if it is toxic, I don't recommend staying there. I know you mentioned you're staying there for personal reasons, but I'd make a pros & cons list of what would happened if you leave. [Ex. Pro: "I would feel at peace" Con: "I don't have another job(yet)", etc] I've been through many jobs, and I don't believe in staying in jobs that affect your mental health in a negative way to where it's also affecting your personal life and causing anxiety.
There'll always be other jobs out there. You can still work this current one, but look for one on the side with one that fits your requirements. Sometimes, networking may be best too, see if a friend/family member may help you find another job. Once you find another job, you can quit this one and not have to worry about the headaches and harsh/rude coworkers.
I also have some questions for you[if it's too personal, I understand if you do not wish to answer]:
1) What are you currently looking for in a job/career? [Ex. A job with a flexible schedule, one where you can travel, less hours, certain pay, etc]
2) What are your job/career goals at the moment? [Ex. "In X amount of years I want to work in XYZ field".]
3) Do you want to go (back) to college/university/trade school (or start it if you haven't yet?) or start your own business?
If you haven't, I recommend checking out job agencies.
They help match people up to jobs that they are skilled at, or help you learn the skills you need in order to get the job you want and give great advice.
I wish you the best!
Hi. I understand. I find when I have a lot of tasks that are outside my current skill level, it is really uncomfortable, especially if there is time pressure and criticism from coworkers. I have also had coworkers leave the organization and their tasks fall to me, sometimes without enough cross training. I don’t get “yelled at”, but I think people sometimes treat me as less competent when I inherit a new task and they expect me to understand it better than I do. Here is a suggestion. Try not to take the criticism from others on yourself. You may do things differently than they do and at a different speed. But pressure from them or yourself will slow you down. When you have “mental space” to solve a problem, it becomes easier to solve. Ideally that means we have lots of time and no one looking over our shoulder or yelling at us. When ideal conditions don’t exist we can sometimes create more mental space by mindfully concentrating on the immediate task at hand. Wishing you the best of luck at this job.
Thank you for the kind words. I’m starting to get to grips with more of my tasks at work. It is just for my whole life I have lived in a rural area so travelling long distance for education meant I didn’t have the time for work.
I got my masters degree last year and decided to just get work to try and live a normal life. But this is really my first job. Being so isolated and with no real friends I have lived with anxiety and depression. I am now 30 and I feel there is a sense of importance that I should be that person we all think of in their thirties with a job and such. I am only starting in the lowest position available due to my lack of experience.
It is hard when you have nobody to count on or trust. You feel stupid for asking questions about a job people expect you to be good at because of your education. So it’s not so much the mistakes but the anticipation. Your mind almost makes you believe that you have already made the catastrophe beforehand.
Things have gotten slightly better. I have learned new things and practiced. New things still to come. But yeah maybe it’s the isolation, or my age, or just mental health but you already know it get tiring living this way.
In response to the questions of what I want. I really don’t know. That bothers me. The fear of being wrong and doing things badly often overrides my ambition. I find that I have nothing that really attracts me. I worry often about this. I worry a lot when I have energy.
Thank you for your comments and advice, it’s good and helpful. I appreciate anyone willing to help, always will.
It seems to me that if everything is so negative at this workplace, then it needs to be changed in order to feel comfortable, since we spend half of our time at work. And let these people be left alone with their negativity
