Im not sure if this is the right place to put this. I looked around the forums but im not in my best state of mind, youll have to excuse me. The past few months I have gone through some pretty serious trauma which included the loss of some very close people to me. Along with that I have had severe depression and anxiety disorders and mass amounts of stress. I thought I would be okay (for the most part) since it has been a few weeks since to most recent event. however these last few days I have felt myself becoming more and more detached from everything. A few people have told me it was depersonalization. Having an incredibly hard time focusing, "zoning out" and losing large chunks of time, having my replies be so late and dulled that people thing I am drugged or being a jerk to ignore them. I have had this happen once before, but I wasnt really "aware" until it had passed. now, obviously, i get moments of clarity. I still feel like I am writing this on autopilot, but I feel more "here" then I have today. I will see some doctors within a few weeks, but i was wondering if there was anything i could do until there to help deal with this feeling? its affecting every part of my life that it touches..I have tried talking to my friends about it, but they only know bits and pieces. i am worried if they knew everything they wouldnt look at me the same anymore....

I know exactly what you mean -- it happens to me all the time.

The way that someone else explained it to me is that the mind and body know to protect themselves when life gets to be too much, and tries to pull away when you have to feel so much pain. Sometimes you just have to let it happen, and forgive yourself for letting it happen.

At the same time, it sounds like you're feeling distressed by the fact that you're detaching from the people and things that you love. Try practicing mindfulness a little bit at a time -- focus on what you're doing, at any given moment, even if that's just having a cup of tea, or walking the dog, or talking to a friend. Doing it for even a few minutes can make you feel better.

I hope that you feel better soon, and good luck.

I don't have personal experience with depersonalization, but from what I've read on the subject it sounds likepersistentFan36 had a great idea with Mindfulness. Mindfulness is about observing, describing, and participating in the current moment while practicing non-judgement, being focused ononlyone thing at a time, and being effective (doing what is needed to get what you want/need).

Two short video clipsexplaining mindfulness.
Some simple mindfulness exercises to try.

There are also Grounding Techniques, which are also with the purpose of bringing you back to the present moment. You might find physical grounding, safety statements, and describing what you are doing in great detail helpful. It's kind of trial and error though, so choosing 2 or 3 to try can be a great way to start finding what works (and doesn't work) for you.

I wish you the best, and hope things get better soon. It sounds like it's been really really rough lately.
