Each year, over 44,000 people die by suicide in the United States alone.

For every one person who dies by suicide, 25 people attempt.

The World Health Organization estimates that over 800,000 people die by suicide each year worldwide.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Together, we can open up the conversation about mental health and suicide

We want to know about your Reasons to Stay. By sharing your reasons, maybe others will be inspired to find their reason to stay too.

One of the things that keep me going is the fact that I can make a difference, even if it is a small on.

We can all make a difference. Maybe you made someone smile today because you asked how they were doing. Maybe you helped someone pick up there things when they dropped them. It made a difference to them. Remember that.

I have struggled with various mental illnesses for the past 4 years, and with that suicidal idealations followed. Even now sometimes I just casually think about it, but unlike before I have no real intent to do it. I have come to far to let it all go to waste. I just started Nursing school, I have my parents, my sister, my niece and nephew. I cant let them lose me, and I cant lose myself. I am working one day at a time, and Im determined to live my life.

Well, my reason to stay is my family. My friends and relatives, they all love me (at least I hope so). I dont enjoy life in general, so all that people that Im close to are something like an anchor that keeps me on Earth for one more day. I know what it is to lose someone who is so important to you that you cant imagine your life without him. I dont know if Im important to my relatives, but I still dont want them to suffer. I had three tries during last year, but I hope I wont have more. At least until I have someone to live for.

I have a few reasons to stay.

Friends, my parents.

but the one thing that is dearest to me is the thing that helped me find the friends that made me wanna stay in this world, and that is the metal scene/culture/lifestile. Trough finding this wonderfull music, and exploring it i found friends who have helped me build myself up so much, who is there for me, and i'm for them. Friends who always is happy to see me.

Theres another sunset to see. Theres interesting things to tell your friends. Theres dogs wearing boots. Theres more books to read, more things to learn. Theres foods you have never tried. You can find happiness in so many places.

@Kate

What is your Reason to Stay?

Today answering this question is somewhat critical for me. I've spent the last couple of hours searching for an answer. It shouldn't be that hard, but for a variety of reasons it is.

Here is what I've come up with:

- Splashing in puddles
- The smell of coffee
- Music
- The sound of the rain
- People who truly listen

Then there are the deep reasons:

If I give in then I have been entirely defeated. If I am entirely defeated they win. Do I dare to continue to show up and fight when nobody things I will?

This one is a little out there, and my geek side is about to make a public apperance.
Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem is another reason. The theorem is a mathematical principle, and in some cases is argued that it can apply to philosophical concepts.

In plain terms the theorem suggests that infinate knowledge is not possible, or we can't know everything.

So why's this a reason to live?

Because it means anyone deciding anything-- including to die-- cannot and never will have all the facts available to them. Perhaps not even all those specific facts relevant to their choice of the time. What if there is some extrememly important fact I am not aware of?

My reason to stay: I love my job as a pilot. It's tricky enough that you have to really work mentally, and it's something to be proud of. The views are breathtaking, and the sensation when you lift off the ground is beyond words.

My other, sillier reason is that I want to adopt a bunch of cats.
