My life has a very depressing "gloomy vibe"

Everything has a certain “feeling or vibe” to it. These feelings are not as general, as moods and emotions are. Someone cannot get just a “Sad impression”. Each impression is unique and different, similar to a flavor. For example; both vanilla and chocolate have very sweet flavors, yet they are both very unique and different from each other. This is the same way for impressions. An impression can have a general mood and be a “happy/positive impression” yet its “flavor” could be different from other impressions. (No, this does not mean that I can actually taste these feelings, it is just a metaphor for better explanation)

I don't know what this is called but I need help, it has drive me into some pretty intense depressive episodes in the past, I don't want it to happen again. When I pick up a bad feeling from a place person etc.. it sometimes will carry on with me, back to my house, etc.. then my neutral feeling will be contaminated by this feeling. Even when I change my scenery and such it still carries on as if my mind keeps hanging onto it and keeping it there. these feelings tend to linger for awhile, even after I leave the place that I got the feeling from. It gets very stressful since these things have always greatly affected me since I was little.

If anyone has any information on what this is, what it's called, how I can stop associating these negative feelings with the positive ones, and how I can make these things stop lingering, I would really appreciate it.

I am sorry for the long post, thank you for reading this :) and if you relate to this or understand what I mean, feel free to share about it :0

Thank you reader!! :D

Hello,

What you described sounds very intense, and I can understand how overwhelming that could become.

It reminded me of what I'm currently reading in one of my workbooks - about hyper empathy or what the book described as 'having a 'sixth sense' emotional sensitivity'.

It describes a 'sixth sense' ability to perceive and absorb negative emotions, or being over-sensitive to another person's feelings, even sometimes without actually seeing or hearing from them first. That there can be a kind of instant, subconscious reaction to emotion states of others. That this can feel like being 'infected' with the same emotion of others, yet sometimes being unaware of why they feel that way, and that it can be very hard to create a sense of detachment from these feelings that are not their own.

I know that's not exactly the same as what you described, it just reminded me of it. Have you ever talked about this with someone else before?

@leaMoon123 Hi. I think I have experienced this as well. It may be less about your contact with persons or places than it is about a subconscious reaction. Learning about mindfulness might help you. Mindfulness can help us experience our emotions in a way that can sometimes reduce or eliminate negative feelings. In my own experience, thoughts and sometimes feelings are “sticky” - they stick with us for awhile - they are more likely to fade away slowly rather that disappear. So it makes sense your feelings would follow you home. Another thing I’ve found really helpful is learning about the thought processes that cause depression and tools to deal with them. You might want to check out Dr David Burns book, Feeling Good. For a short introduction to that book, see this Dr David Burns, TED talk.
