I just had the experience of listening through a mindfulness meditation session and... not realizing when it was over. I was expecting a bell or something; it surely doesn't help that I'm drunk and it's one in the morning. I imagined my lungs, the squishy pink sponges in my chest cavity between my weirdly complex rib muscles and my tough diaphragm, the muscles in my chest moving together like a wave, a dance around bone, & the diaphragm pushing in and out, the space in my chest appearing and the sponges absorbing air and the equilibrium between the two. I brought myself back several times, the first time thinking, "yes, it's 10 minutes long" (this had prevented me from completing it for the last 24 hours, wrecking my days-on-growth-path progress, but I just couldn't dedicate that much attention to it when I had all this other stuff going on), i had wanted longer ones because i felt like every time i had gotten it, the voices had interrupted me to say it was okay if my attention wandered... ten minutes just seemed like a lot of time before. but this time, i stared at the ceiling and several times reminded myself to focus back on my breath, and around the fourth time in a row with no interruption, i realized that this had been more than ten minutes and surely the audio file had completed long ago.

good luck and stuff, everyone.

Got up the nerve to actually talk about problems and am feeling much better now. Having trouble relaxing though. I don't like the 5 minutes exercise at all.

@Shoebox It can be so hard to take that first step and talk to someone about your problems, You should be proud of yourself! I'm so glad to hear you are feeling much better for talking to someone, We are always here for you!

This is an interesting place. It is odd for me to look at the positive things so writing them as an exercise shows me that there are good things that happen, not just bad.

Mindfulness exercises work only if you do them.

User Profile: holly29
holly29 October 30th, 2015

@FerlinCletus They do indeed only work if you try them, Have you tried any yet? You never know, They might really help!

I have indeed been using them and they really do help. I had a meltdown last night and an hour into it I realized that a mindfulness exercise would probably help me regain control, but I refused to do one. I just wanted to sit in my anger and rage. I had been so happy earlier in the day, unusually happy, and I let some off hand comments flip everything upside down. The comments weren't bad and not even directed at me, I just lost control and the pendulum shifted back to that old familiar place. I'm still suffering from the aftereffects of that mood swing and it could have lessened or avoided if I hadn't been stubborn and just done something about it.
