Good in the world

So, lately, I've been feeling pretty down about the state of...everything. And why not, right? Alot of things are just horrible, and I wouldn't even know where to begin fixing it.

But...the more sorrow I take on seeing others hurt, the less I'm able to actually help them. It's a bit of a vicious cycle, and frankly: I'm done with it.

Sometimes hope isn't just born, i guess. Sometimes you have to nurture it.

So this is basically a thread of the good things in the world. Feel free to add to it! Even personal anecdotes of experiencing that good are welcome!

I want it to be like, a really really long thread xD I want to believe it can.

So, the first one, without further ado:

We can listen to the sounds from 270 World Heritage sites- for free, from anywhere, thanks to this amazing project! How is that not smile-worthy? xD

Okay, in my defence I had a very genuine (personal shh) reason not to be on recently xD but without further delay:

Sterilize, sterilize, sterilize. Ever wonder if all the work hospitals put into ensuring a clean environment for patients is enough? With so many diseases, germaphobes must be having a hard time entering hospital grounds. Here's a little relief for them, with this brilliant Jamaican student's new invention: a self cleaning door handle for hospitals! Read about how it works here.

England: a lot of things come to mind when we think of that famed country. But what you didn't expect is this: the recovery of 150 endangered species of animals in England. More needs to be done, the English rightfully say, but let's take a moment to appreciate what has been done too! Celebrate this lovely bit of news

And the previously mentioned ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand still holds, which yes is news worthy xD how are we to aim for peace if we aren't grateful when we have it? These two countries have taken the step towards more peaceful living for their people, so rejoice! Updates checked here.

Should I add images with the news? 🤔

Did i miss anything while i was away? Any personal good news you want to share? Stage is all yours 😃

@unassumingEyes Great idea for a thread! Here are some other great online alternatives to G00gle (which are also positive things):

Late last year I met someone who's turned out to be a good friend...he's loyal, basically good & highly skilled in certain areas. While I'm mostly solitary by nature, I gotta admit: it's good to have a true friend.

100 miles of old fencing removed by "rewilders" in America's northwest

Okay, so I haven't posted any goodness since 2025. My bad. Looking at the hopeful side of things has gotten admittedly harder, so I hope you don't mind being so very patient with me, cuz I don't know what to tell you if you do 🫣

Without a further ado:

A new cooling paint can be used to tackle drought in arid areas. No, really, I thought it was crazy too. It's just a step towards finding a better solution for drought and scarcity of fresh water, but you can't deny- it's a pretty cool step. Here's how it works.

Polar bears in Svalbard, Norway, have shocked scientists with their resilience. Expected to be suffering under the decline of sea-ice (climate change is no fun, kids), theyve instead adapted to eating land-based prey. These guys have no plan to leave soon, let me tell you. Check it out here, along with photos of adorable polar bears seriously i implore you go gush about em cause theyre here to stay*

Tw for this one: discussion violent crime.

Knife crime in the UK at record low levels (...for the UK, anyways). This means lesser lives lost or gravely injured, lesser burdens borne by the UK people, lesser families left reeling from tragedy, lesser empty seats and quiet funerals for lives that had no business ending so very suddenly.
It means progress. Lovely, hope-inducing, stress combatting progress. It's not perfect, but we can't focus on tragedies alone. That, my friends, is depressing.
For the stats lovers, here are some details.

*not everyone is a polar bear. Climate change is still bad. Nature's just not giving up- there's a lesson there, if we'll take it.

Chin up, guys. We've got a lot more in us than we realize.

@unassumingEyes If the polar bears decide that humans are a perfectly valid prey option...well, a lot of people would consider it bad news. But I think it would be great, because

  1. What with our technological abilities & hubris to match, we need something to put us in our place. Time was, people used to be humble in the face of nature...not anymore. We've managed to turn AIDS into the 21st century equivalent of diabetes; MRSA bacteria makes a mess but hasn't taken many victims, etc. Humanity needs a "peer competitor", to use a geopolitical phrase.
  2. I can think of quite a few people who should be caught & eaten by a very large bear. 😏
