Good in the world

So, lately, I've been feeling pretty down about the state of...everything. And why not, right? Alot of things are just horrible, and I wouldn't even know where to begin fixing it.

But...the more sorrow I take on seeing others hurt, the less I'm able to actually help them. It's a bit of a vicious cycle, and frankly: I'm done with it.

Sometimes hope isn't just born, i guess. Sometimes you have to nurture it.

So this is basically a thread of the good things in the world. Feel free to add to it! Even personal anecdotes of experiencing that good are welcome!

I want it to be like, a really really long thread xD I want to believe it can.

So, the first one, without further ado:

We can listen to the sounds from 270 World Heritage sites- for free, from anywhere, thanks to this amazing project! How is that not smile-worthy? xD

This is for the people worried about the environment especially:

screenshot-20250716-111004-samsung-internet_1752653575.jpg

This sort of thing ought to make the news ^ sure, it's only just been discovered and theres alot of steps before doing this could possibly become common practice, but where theres news about environmental issues, there should be news about this too! Look at our fellow humans! Theyre science-ing their way to a better world!

Heres where you can get more detail!

@unassumingEyes Eyes! Omg the sounds all over the world is so cool! 😳 You find the coolest things! Thank you for sharing this!

I think you're right though and you do need to nurture hope. Especially when it seems like there's not much to have hope in. But this... Sounds of the world... We're all human, no matter where we live. We're all trying to nurture our hopes and dreams. Trying to enrich our lives and maybe, with a little luck, we enrich the lives of those around us. 💙 You just enriched mine tonight!

@unassumingEyes

first off, i love love love this idea. gratitude is everything!! and well, i have two things to share!!

1. a grandparent told a story they've told a hundred times, and someone still listened. because it’s not really about the story. It’s about the love that goes beyond words 💗🥺

2. and my second one is!! somewhere, someone just fell asleep next to someone they love, and truly feels safe

(this GIF makes me laugh, haha!!) you’ve made it through every hard day so far, and i am so proud of you. i know you will continue to fight and let yourself feel and create such positivity. you are so loved, i hope with time, these good things find you.. who knows maybe you are closer than you think?? but seeing this post really made me smile, thank you!

@safeplace288 awww I love the one about someone falling asleep💖💖 I suppose that could be true for everything, somewhere someone right now is getting married, and someone just met a life long friend💖💖

And yes I live with a lot of older folks and I'll listen to their stories 100 times, it's definitely not a waste of time💖

@safeplace288 the grandparents thing is so so sweet! It goes from listening to the story the first time to just enjoying watching then tell you the tale 🤍

Somewhere someone is okay, and thats a pretty good reason to not give up 🤍

Hi Lola!

Bacteria are widely used to create medicines through genetic engineering. The most significant by far is insulin, used for treating diabetes. They insert the gene of a useful protein (insulin in this case) and put the modified bacteria in a huge container with warm water and nutrients (like sugar). The bacteria reproduce massively and produce this protein. Then they distill the med. All insulin these days is produced this way (about 15 million kg per year).

Many bacteria also naturally produce antibiotics (no genetic engineering needed). Though the first discovered antibiotic (penicillin) is produced by a fungus (which kills the bacteria around it, that's how it was discovered in 1928 by Alexander Fleming).

And talking of "Good in the world", the theme of this thread, penicillin was a huge game changer, a milestone in human health and wellbeing. It saved the lives of 200 million people, (including mine when I had pneumonia as a child.) And it opened the door for the development of many more antibiotics, which saved hundreds of millions of lives up to this day.
