Things People Who Have Acne Wish You Knew

If this is part of your life story, please share your insights! What would you like the rest of us to learn? What should we know about people in this community? How would you like people to interact with you? Should people ask questions? What’s the best way for people to learn about this? Do you have any resources (books, movies, YT videos, etc) that will give us greater understanding and empathy and kindness toward people who experience the same things you do?

If you’re not on this journey, we welcome you to listen, learn, and ask respectful, good-faith questions! Open-ended questions are highly encouraged, as they give people the space to share their unique experiences in their own words. While this is a safe space to learn about things you’ve never experienced, please remember to be sensitive, and avoid sharing harmful stereotypes or debating someone's lived reality. If you have a question, ask it with empathy. If someone gently corrects you, please be open to learning. Let's have a gentle, fun, friendly conversation where we support one another, because it takes all sorts to make a world!

@jesusredeemedme2425

When I hit puberty, I started getting acne. A lot of it. They were big, pus-filled bumps. At one point, a classmate asked me if I had chickenpox. I still haven’t forgotten that, even after so many years. The vain attempts to make me insecure. Sigh.

As I grew older and out of my teens, the breakouts reduced significantly, partly because I had to follow a dermatologist-prescribed routine. I also adopted a healthier diet, restricted my sugar and milk intake. But the scars remain. I get asked how I got them, as if people don’t know what acne scars are.

I’ve learned to embrace those minuscule scars because I’m not an actress who is supposed to have flawless, spotless skin. I’m human, and I can have flaws. My flaws don't get to define me.

My acne is my problem and none of your damn business. I will deal with my skin issues myself. Please do not sympathize with me or tell me that my acne scars are a stain on my beauty. It’s distasteful.

Acne can be due to underlying conditions as simple as dandruff or PCOS. Please get it checked as soon as you can. Treatment sought in the early stages gives better results compared to later stages.

I've not yet met people that kind. I've always been judged even if I had a single active pimple on my face. They'll ask me, "did you eat a lot of mangoes?", "is your cycle close?", etc.

Why mangoes???

3 replies
User Profile: trueconfidant123
trueconfidant123 April 21st

@jesusredeemedme2425

Ayurveda believes that mangoes increase body “heat,” which can potentially lead to skin inflammation or acne in people who are prone to it.

Mangoes do not directly cause acne but can trigger breakouts due to their high sugar content, high glycemic index (GI), and potential allergic reactions to sap, particularly in sensitive individuals. (Google)

@trueconfidant123 I can relate to this. I also had many acne on my face during puberty, it was really bad and painful :( and made me feel very insecure about my skin in school. It was mainly cus of me being overweight, My poor diet and dandruffs. My mom always use to tell us not to pick at them... so I used to try my best not to pop any of those. Now it's almost all gone and clear after using some dermatologists face-wash and weightless ❤️

@fossilfellow

I'm glad to hear that your skin has cleared up. Following a derm prescribed routine religiously is always the way to go.

My skin has cleared up too. I've been following an elaborate derm prescribed routine for quite sometime. It really paid off!

People find it satisfying, I guess? They are particularly audacious though... I never let anyone do it, you're not supposed to pop them. Then they tend to insist at least twice before giving up. It's like trying to get rid of a salesman.

Like most, my acne and scarring was the worst when I was pre-teen/teen but a lot of people around me had the same issue.

Mine were sugar, pmt and maybe due to not using the right skincare. I did my own homework but what I find unforgivable was pleading with others to share their remedies and them refusing, making out they had natural flawlessness.

Later on I discovered the truth, they were all using a hormonal pill. For my research, multivitamins helped, oil free creams, avoiding witch hazel, aloe vera and tea tree oil was better too.

Also a face brush gives a deeper clean, than just using your hands. Sometimes I have breakouts still but they don't last.

Face brush isn't harsh for the skin?

22 replies
User Profile: ScrabbleBrain
ScrabbleBrain April 21st

@trueconfidant123 A scrub definitely is too rough for combination skin. A face brush usually has different heads and some are so so soft, that it's perfect for someone's preference.

Weirdly enough I prefer the firmer one, it removes makeup, gives me a massage, firms my skin and deep cleans.

When using wipes or my hands, I didn't realise some of the makeup still remained, when using the brush, all gone. It's personal preference, I didn't spend a lot of money, I got a cheap one :)

@jesusredeemedme2425 there's dry skin, oily skin, or a combination of both oily and dry. My face/hair have to be divas, so they are both 😂

the most annoying part was listening to people who themselves have never experienced acne and still giving useless advices unnecessarily
