Things People Who Have Insomnia Wish You Knew
If this is part of your life story, please share your insights! What would you like the rest of us to learn? What should we know about people in this community? How would you like people to interact with you? Should people ask questions? What’s the best way for people to learn about this? Do you have any resources (books, movies, YT videos, etc) that will give us greater understanding and empathy and kindness toward people who experience the same things you do?
If you’re not on this journey, we welcome you to listen, learn, and ask respectful, good-faith questions! Open-ended questions are highly encouraged, as they give people the space to share their unique experiences in their own words. While this is a safe space to learn about things you’ve never experienced, please remember to be sensitive, and avoid sharing harmful stereotypes or debating someone's lived reality. If you have a question, ask it with empathy. If someone gently corrects you, please be open to learning. Let's have a gentle, fun, friendly conversation where we support one another, because it takes all sorts to make a world!

@jesusredeemedme2425 thanks for tagging me 💗
This is my forte lol.
@jesusredeemedme2425 I had an online friend with insomnia, it was really depressing for her, and she couldn't sleep even after trying so hard, at most she had little naps and then spent the rest of her time on phone to pass time and avoid getting bored 🙁
Looking forward to hearing other people's experiences with it 🤍
@fossilfellow I'm so sorry. I know how incredibly hard it is dealing with insomnia. Hugs! 🫂

:
Insomnia can be a very lonely experience. When the world is asleep, and the mind refuses to rest, the night can feel endless. What many people may not realise is that it’s not just about “not sleeping” it’s the exhaustion, the racing thoughts, and sometimes the quiet frustration of wanting rest but not being able to reach it.
What can help people with insomnia the most is gentle understanding. Sometimes it’s simply knowing that it’s okay to have difficult nights and that rest does not always have to look perfect. Small things — a calm bedtime routine, reducing screen time before sleep, soft music, breathing exercises, journaling thoughts before bed, or even a short walk during the day- can slowly help the mind and body feel safer to rest.
Equally important is compassion from others. Avoiding pressure or quick fixes and instead offering patience and kindness can make a big difference.
To anyone living with insomnia here: please remember you are not alone in this experience. Your body and mind are doing their best, and with care, support, and time, healing sleep is possible.
@LopaConnect Thank you for sharing with us ❤️

@LopaConnect
Thank you for sharing this. It's very well written.

I mean it. We often do not realise what goes with people suffering from sleepless nights....
@LopaConnect
I know. I go through it on a regular and each day I wake up drained to function normally.
It's been a life long struggle for me, working night shifts over the past 8 years hasn't really made a difference either. Being suspected of having ADHD has made a little more sense of it as I tend to sleep for 2-3 hrs at a time only occasionally stringing a couple together. Every 10-14 days the accumulated fatigue might not me out for a 12hr sleep 🤪🤪
It is very frustrating but you've learnt to just have rest periods, either with radio, podcasts, audiobooks or relaxing music on quietly so at least my body gets physical rest and bit be proud about sleeping whenever I'm actually able too.
I have had sleep studies with Halter monitors overnight on hospital on a few occasions with out any success. I've got an athletes heart, right ventrocal os 40% larger than normal, means my resting heart rate and sleep heart rate can drop as low as low 30's, my heart occasionally stopping completely, vagus nerve will shock it to restart and I can literally jump off the bed.
Makes sleeping fun 😁😁😁
@RunningMachine *hugs* ❤️❤️

@fossilfellow
Made me smile, 'hugs' would only make it worse, less likely to sleep 🤪🤪
@RunningMachine Oh, okay ❤️
It can make every single moment miserable, the more sleep you miss and lose. Overall, it's the number one reason I've had to call off work... And I dunno how many plans I've had to cancel over it. I can usually manage it, but there are times that I can't.
@jesusredeemedme2425 that just closing our eyes doesn’t help!
@aquaPineapple6839
It's easier said than done.
