Things People Who Have Limb Loss/Limb Differences Wish You Knew

If this is part of your life story, please share your insights! What would you like the rest of us to learn? What should we know about people in this community? How would you like people to interact with you? Should people ask questions? What’s the best way for people to learn about this? Do you have any resources (books, movies, YT videos, etc) that will give us greater understanding and empathy and kindness toward people who experience the same things you do?

If you’re not on this journey, we welcome you to listen, learn, and ask respectful, good-faith questions! Open-ended questions are highly encouraged, as they give people the space to share their unique experiences in their own words. While this is a safe space to learn about things you’ve never experienced, please remember to be sensitive, and avoid sharing harmful stereotypes or debating someone's lived reality. If you have a question, ask it with empathy. If someone gently corrects you, please be open to learning. Let's have a gentle, fun, friendly conversation where we support one another, because it takes all sorts to make a world!

Hm, I got this one. So, I grew up with my leg growing a little differently, and they thought they'd have to do surgery on it before I was an adult.

As it turned out, it normalized itself eventually, but as a kid, I couldn't run fast.

So, if you ever see someone having trouble running normally, don't be an absolute monster and say "run, Forrest, run!". (Thanks to those people, I didn't watch that movie until my late 20's)

This girl was born with no legs... and she's a skater, an actress, and a model! How cool is that???? <3

@jesusredeemedme2425 I had both my legs amputated🙁 and I'm missing 2 fingers in each hand🙁 it's not been a easy road for me. But I'm doing good😁💖 but please treat me/us just like any other person, it's ok to ask questions, please don't stare. Offer help if you see us struggling. And yes I hate the amputation ward so much I will never set foot in it again😂😂

Do you ever have phantom foot/leg pain or other sensations?

How do you adapt your art, lacking a couple of fingers?

Your humor is epic! <3

@jesusredeemedme2425 phantom legs yeah sometimes I get that especially at the start🙁

Art well I use my thumb and middle finger to hold the prncil/paintbrush etc. It took a lot of self patients, time, and trial and errors🙁 but I'm so proud of myself for not giving up😁 I love to draw😁💖 also on my computer tablet thingy, I type with my middle finger.. So I'm secretly flipping you all off as I type 😁😁

Has the phantom leg phenomenon faded over the years?

Is it uncomfortable to hold it that way?

Have the doctors considered prosthetics, or are your spinal injuries too severe for that to be a possibility?

@jesusredeemedme2425 yeah my spine is to bad for prosthetic to work. I'm very lucky to still have  movement of my arms. At the start it was almost like forgetting you lost your legs, you could still feel them there, it's really weird but as the years past I don't get phantom limbs anymore💖 and no it's not uncomfortable holding pencils this way because that's the way I learnt to do it🙂💖

What was your diagnosis? You don’t have to share <3

Do they think it will deteriorate or get better?

What are your favorite art media? <3

Do you do digital art?

Can you scoot around using your arms, like the girl in the video below? <3

If you could have bionic legs, would you do it?

What’s your favorite and least favorite things about not having legs and fingers? Are there advantages and disadvantages?

@jesusredeemedme2425 advantages I get to play the disabled card anytime😁😁 disadvantages it's not easy to do everyday things that most people can do without thinking twice. My spine is broken, I've had several operations and it's not completely fixable even with all the metal plates🙁 overtime it will deteriorate and I will most likely become completely paralysed in the end🙁  with all my different health issues the doctors said it will be a miracle if I live past 40🙁 I love all kind of art, but for a while now I've been loving working with pastels😁 and no I can't scoot around on my butt because of my spine
