Things People Who Have Tinnitus Wish You Knew

If this is part of your life story, please share your insights! What would you like the rest of us to learn? What should we know about people in this community? How would you like people to interact with you? Should people ask questions? What’s the best way for people to learn about this? Do you have any resources (books, movies, YT videos, etc) that will give us greater understanding and empathy and kindness toward people who experience the same things you do?

If you’re not on this journey, we welcome you to listen, learn, and ask respectful, good-faith questions! Open-ended questions are highly encouraged, as they give people the space to share their unique experiences in their own words. While this is a safe space to learn about things you’ve never experienced, please remember to be sensitive, and avoid sharing harmful stereotypes or debating someone's lived reality. If you have a question, ask it with empathy. If someone gently corrects you, please be open to learning. Let's have a gentle, fun, friendly conversation where we support one another, because it takes all sorts to make a world!

It’s really REALLY loud, even in the silence.

Most of the time, you don’t even notice it (at least in my case). When you think about it or notice it, it gets gradually louder until it’s deafening. It’s sometimes like it doesn’t exist until you think about it.

It will occasionally go from *nothing* to BOOM! (It just did for me lol)

@jesusredeemedme2425

It's very annoying, sometimes you forget you have it and others it's just painful a loud high pitch that never ends (it's not like a siren that goes up and down its a constant one 'note' drone, at least for me)

Oh the terrible tinnitus!
I wish that people knew that sometimes it can keep us up at night,
because the sound is so loud that you can barely hear your own thoughts 😮‍💨
That we often prefer to have some type of different sounds around us,
only to be able to avoid the horrible tinnitus soundtrack.
We get overwhelmed by tinnitus, we can struggle with hearing even though our hearing is perfect.
And it's definitely something that takes time to learn to live with 🫂

Oh yeah. Silence is deafening, so sometimes I open the window or play music.

  1. That not hearing a ringing normally means I'm dreaming.

  2. To tolerate or at least be kind about the fact that I need to play a thunderstorm recording from rainmymood.com while I sleep, otherwise I wake up at 4am with a migraine. It's not my fault something burst inside my ear
