Things People With Down Syndrome Wish You Knew

If this is part of your life story, please share your insights! What would you like the rest of us to learn? What should we know about people in this community? How would you like people to interact with you? Should people ask questions? What’s the best way for people to learn about this? Do you have any resources (books, movies, YT videos, etc) that will give us greater understanding and empathy and kindness toward people who experience the same things you do?

If you’re not on this journey, please share insights you’ve learned while interacting with those who are, whether family, friends, or anyone else. Share things you’ve read, and ask if they’re true. Share beliefs that you have, ask questions, and more! This is a safe space where you can learn about things you’ve never experienced. <3

Let’s have a gentle, fun, friendly conversation among friends! As a song in one of the Land Before Time movies says, “It takes all sorts to make a world!” <3

The closest interaction I've had with someone with down syndrome- I and my batchmates conducted a workshop for children with disabilities. The student I assisted was very friendly and willing to learn. I held her hand guided her in both drawing and writing. I was surprised about her grasping power and the ability to follow instructions without them being repeated. Visual cues were a plus point for her. It was a memorable experience.

Another case that I would like to share-

Mysha Rizvi, a young woman with Down syndrome, is a cherished team member at Michelin Star Chef Vikas Khanna’s New York restaurant, Bungalow.

It brings me joy to see people overcome challenges and achieve such feats.

It's been a while since I've known anyone on 7 cups with Down Syndrome.

Here are some videos for Down Syndrome Day from the past few years and this year:

@jesusredeemedme2425 This is great to invite discussion around Down’s syndrome.

Thank you Kara and hope you are having a relaxed weekend.

I am interested in the interesting responses too that I know will come through.

As for me there was a video I saw on YouTube - moved me to tears.

A child with autism was crying and a Down’s syndrome child knew what they needed in that moment - a hug and not conversation.

The emotional expressiveness I noticed in a female patient with Down Syndrome was particularly strong - she had buckets of enthusiasm!
