Things People in Poverty Wish You Knew
If this is part of your life story, please share your insights! What would you like the rest of us to learn? What should we know about people in this community? How would you like people to interact with you? Should people ask questions? What’s the best way for people to learn about this? Do you have any resources (books, movies, YT videos, etc) that will give us greater understanding and empathy and kindness toward people who experience the same things you do?
If you’re not on this journey, we welcome you to listen, learn, and ask respectful, good-faith questions! Open-ended questions are highly encouraged, as they give people the space to share their unique experiences in their own words. While this is a safe space to learn about things you’ve never experienced, please remember to be sensitive, and avoid sharing harmful stereotypes or debating someone's lived reality. If you have a question, ask it with empathy. If someone gently corrects you, please be open to learning. Let's have a gentle, fun, friendly conversation where we support one another, because it takes all sorts to make a world!

When people say to the impoverished, "Money can't buy you happiness." It actually can by giving us the means we need to reach stability and security, which enable us to pursue what brings us happiness. You cannot find happiness when every moment of your life is spent on survival.
@Heather225 That's a good one.
@Heather225
So true 🥰
Not all of us are bad with money. I grew up learning how to budget at a young age. I mainly bought what I needed, made it stretch or went without.
A lot of people like their designer labels and brands and wouldn't set foot anywhere else. I always chuckled to myself they were spending 3x times as me and ran out of money, where as I discovered places that did huge discounts but with the same good quality and design. (Just lacking a known name).
It was always bewildering to me how certain people only saw the lack of money and not our values and ethics, like we were beneath them.
But we just always tried to treat others equally with respect.
I'm not looking for handouts or charity, if someone does me a favour or spoils me. I'll always find a way to do the same in return for them, not out of obligation but because they made a tough time, lighter and I appreciate them for it.
But at the same time, if you have an agenda and keep saying Well I have heaps of money and you don't, so be nice to me, well then you can keep it. I don't use people and whatever I can't afford, I don't need..
Unless it's an essential and then I'll find a way to get it at a discount because that seems to be my skill, bargain hunting. I've been doing it for myself and others for a very long time.
I've even successfully haggled.
@ScrabbleBrain Sorry pulling a Columbo, just one more thing that came to me..
You can keep your overpriced fancy pants restaurants and events. They are not worth the expense and typically, it's a cold unwelcoming venue.
I would rather go somewhere local, where they smile at you, the portions are value for money and you actually feel entertained instead of ripped off.
Knock off that group billing. I'm not paying for your gluttony. I order within my meals and what I will finish. I'm not there to show off.
Clothes shopping alone or dining on a 1 to 1 basis became a much more affordable option. Yeesh some people are clueless!
@ScrabbleBrain
You have literally read my mind, when I was travelling, these kind women would offer to wash your clothes and iron them, for peanuts, and the tourists were so rude and often jeered st them, but I was so appreciative of all their efforts and gave big tips for them to help their children and they were genuinely surprised and delighted when I sought them out to say thank you 🥰
@Amanda84 Aww we all know you've got a heart of gold :)
Even despite that mysteriously questionable dazzling eye twinkle 😂
