SHORT ESSAY: Are We So Busy Hoping That We Forget to Live?

Someone in this community recently told me that the only thing we, humans, have is ⭐HOPE⭐. And it made me think: what happens when we become so focused on hoping for a better future that we forget to experience the life we have right now?🌅🌳🏙️🌧️

We spend so much of our lives ⭐hoping for something better⭐. Hoping things will change, that we'll finally be happy, that one day everything will fall into place.🌞

And don't get me wrong, hope has its place. It can give us strength during difficult times, motivate us to keep going, and remind us that our current circumstances don't have to define our entire future. Sometimes, hope is exactly what we need.

But what happens when hope becomes the only things we rely on?

When we constantly look toward the future for happiness, we risk overlooking the things that are already here. I think more people struggle with this than we realize. And when the future doesn't turn out the way we hoped, we might struggle to find meaning in the present. If our only reason to keep going is the belief that something better is coming, what happens when we can no longer believe that?

Our well-being shouldn't have to depend entirely on a future we cannot guarantee.💗🔮

⭐Hope⭐, by its very nature, is something we wish for but don't fully have right now. And while that's not a bad thing, constantly reaching for what is missing can make us blind to what is already here.

🌸 🌔 So, what if we started paying a little more attention to the present? 🌇 🍎

If it's difficult to think of something to appreciate right now, start with something we already have:👂👀👃👅👄 Our Senses. ☕ Really taste your coffee in the morning  🌦️ Enjoy the sun or rain on your skin 🌅 Watch the clouds or the sunset

These are all small things that don't need to lead to anything bigger, or promise you a better tomorrow to be meaningful.

So, for a moment, stop looking ahead. Take a breath. Feel your feet on the ground. Look at what's around you. Ask yourself: Can we allow ourselves to find little moments of life right where we are, even when things aren't okay yet?

We're all figuring this out together. And we don't have to have everything figured out to share a moment of warmth, notice something beautiful, or simply be here.

One small moment at a time. 🔸🌼🔸 Right here. 🔶 Right NOW. 🔶

Love,

Mae

@DmnMae As much as we would hope. I dont think we're capable of feeling content with whatever future we reach or any hard earned achievement we manage to make happen.. not for long at least. Acknowledging this however is far easier then trying to change.. im finding it radher difficult to.. accept? Be proud of what i already have, enjoy the things already present in my life. Everything to me feels pointless if its not leading to something better.

@mont22ha I think trying to learn to live in the present can feel overwhelming in itself, especially when you're used to feeling like everything needs to lead to something better. Maybe it's easier to start small, one step at a time. You don't have to suddenly become amazing at appreciating every moment or make a whole list of things you're supposed to enjoy. Maybe just choose one thing tomorrow that you'd like to experience a little more fully, like your morning coffee or your tea in the evening. Don't worry about how well you're doing it or whether you're making progress. Just allow yourself to experience that one moment without needing it to lead anywhere. And if you forget or find it difficult, that's okay too.

I also think what you said about contentment not lasting is interesting, because maybe that's part of why we shouldn't put all our happiness in the future. Feelings naturally come and go, and even the happiness we experience after achieving something we've worked hard for eventually changes. That doesn't make those achievements meaningless, but perhaps it means we don't have to keep chasing the next thing in the hope that it will finally make us feel content.

I think just noticing that we sometimes forget to enjoy the life we have right now is already a big step. Actually putting it into practice takes time, but every little try counts, even when it doesn't come naturally to us.

@DmnMae Hmm, I never really thought about hope like that before. I guess sometimes hoping for something can make you even more aware of the fact that you don’t have it yet? But at the same time, I don’t think I’d want to stop hoping either. Kind of a weird feeling when it makes you comfortable and uncomfortable at the same time.
