Self help books!

So I am not entirely sure if we are allowed torecommendbooks to the members or not but I was thinking it may be cool to have a list of some good self help books that we can recommend. A lot of the people I talk to are really nervous about going to therapy and a lot of them simply refuse to go. I was thinking that a self help book may be a nice alternative for the mean time that may also help them get the confidence to go and see a psychologist. I guess I am making this thread to see if anyone thinks this is a good idea and also for everyone to make a post about what books their therapists have recommended, what it is good for treating, and what they found most helpful for themselves. Thanks everybody!

By the way one of the books i really enjoyed is called The Feeling Good Handbook by David D. Burns M.D. My psychologist recommended it for people with depression and anxiety and its like $26!

We are all of course have the choice to read whatever book we want to read, but relating to recommending the books to the members, please be wise and careful to recommend only books you know can be trusted, written by professionals, and have good reviews and proven to be scientifically beneficial for them. Cheers!

Hello! A book that I recently read and that I found extremely helpful is The Defining Decade: Why Your Twenties Matter--And How to Make the Most of Them Now by Meg Jay. I recommend it to anyone in their 20's or late teens, specifically those who feel stuck or unsure about which direction they want their life to go. It has stories of real people which I found to be very relatable :)

A book I find really helpful is called The Self-Esteem Workbook by Glenn R. Schiraldi (ISBN: 9781572242524). He is also the author of several other well-known self-help books.

I have also found the anxiety and phobia workbook immensely helpful, and would definitely recommend it to others.

Another go to book of mine is Ethics for the New Millenium by the Dalai Lama. i know it may not work to recommend this particular book to guests, but I think it has a lot of great insight on leading a happy, well adjusted life, and so I will at least recommend it you, fellow listeners.

Since, i was getting a lot of members who claimed to have no friends and don't know how to make one, I keep suggesting them book by Dale Carnegie titled How To Win Friends And Influence People. I personally found the book fun and easy to read and it's not as thick as another book.

Thanks for that great question, Puya! I have also recommended books to various guests and members. And I only recommend the ones I have read myself or which are recommended by someone whom Itrust. I have been tempted to recommend other books, which I was NOTfamiliar with, but decided against it. I'm glad most of us here agree that a referral from us on any book is a serious thing, and on which should not be offered without some investigation first. Guests and members trust our judgment.

I think this is a great question that has been followed by some insightful feedback and great recommendations. I believe the key is to trust your intuition and use noteworthy resources, best sellers, etc.. I know that doesn't guarantee scientific data, but if you recommend something that has been read by millions of ppl vs 10,000 it seems you might be making a good suggestion. I would also add a reminder when you recommend a book that you are not a licensed professional, but you just think this book might be helpful.

yeah so like is it okay to recommend a workbook that my therapist gave me. Like if they are in therapy could they ask their therapist about it?

Great idea Puya does anyone know for sure if we are allowed to recommend books?
