It takes Reflection and Action: Ways to improve Optimism.
It takes so much more than saying “Be Positive” for someone to feel good about themselves, whether it be their academic skills, social skills etc.
We all have our insecurities.
It’s just that some are better at accepting them than others and can see the light in a mainly negative situation.
Reflect and ask yourself:
What has optimism helped you do?
Which situations make you feel less optimistic and was there ever a time where you encouraged someone with something you do not encourage yourself with?
What events, feelings and consequences have I gone through and how can I counteract that in an optimistic way? Ellis's ABC technique confirms that our consequences are a result of the situation event we are exposed to which creates an emotional or behavioral reaction.
Let’s take a look at an example:
-
A - Activating event (e.g. You have an argument with a friend). We all have our triggers to facilitate an emotional reaction.
-
B - Belief (e.g. Thoughts that are negative can come to mind such as “I will always be a terrible friend” “My friend never listens to me”). Do you see the absolutism in these thoughts? These thoughts are stubborn. Unwilling to be open. Too fixed. Where is the inclusivity?
-
C - Consequences (e.g. An argument with a friend can lead to aggressive behavior, lack of self-esteem, confusion, detachment or clinginess in relationships).
Here are some resources to challenge the lack of optimism:

Negative to positive affirmations exercise. Think of 10 statements you have either used in the past or present when you were stressed, upset or angry and challenge yourself to make these statements less negative. Get yourself out of the mud.Let’s start the chain of thought:
Negative affirmation “I will never get this job as there are always other interviewees that give a more confident person than me” CHANGE to Positive affirmation “I will give this interview my best shot - I have value and am more than capable of coming across well.”
Is anyone open to showing us how they changed their negative affirmation to a positive one?
Would love to hear from you all! <3

@GoldenRuleJG I absolutely love this exercise, I actually just recently did exactly what you mentioned: changing negative thoughts into a positive affirmation and its amazing because the affirmation then really hits what you need to work on. my example was:
negative thought: "I am scared of failing."
my positive affirmation: "I have no reason to doubt myself and my abilities." Because it reminds me of the fact that I really don't have any reason to doubt myself. I am an awesome student and open to improvement always. Hence, this negative thought is useless and doesn't have any good reason to come up anymore😊
what a lovely idea! tagging @Victor04 @emotionalTalker2260

Negative affirmation “I will never get this job as there are always other interviewees that give a more confident impression than me”CHANGE to Positive affirmation “I will give this interview my best shot - I have value and am more than capable of coming across well.”
@GoldenRuleJG
thanks for creating such wonderful post <3

My thought is this:
I am a terrible person
*converts it*
I am just a person having a really hard time experiencing big emotions, I’ll be okay one day. But despite being a very upset person I’m crazily kind. And Kindness is like confetti, once it starts, it goes around and maybe one day, it’ll come back to me. So I’m not a terrible person as I have a heart of gold and so much kindness it’s nearly insane.
@emotionalTalker2260 that’s the way talker ❤️❤️
@GoldenRuleJG
Shhh, i wanted to be random and share an image of a dino 😀
and there’s are many ways, thats why we have directions, if one doesn’t work, we can always try another way
@emotionalTalker2260 such a cute Dino 🦕😊☺️
@GoldenRuleJG
yes 😀 my pfp is more adorable though. Its a crying dino eating glitter..
Anyways 😀
<3
I think if I had some smaller successes in the rumination area I might be able to start imagining larger successes. That's how I started having faith in myself at work.
@GoldenRuleJG
I love this tactic! I think it can be useful in so many situations and with some practice gets much easier to do!
My negative thought: If I don't go to this event the person who invited me will hate me and won't want to be friends with me.
New thought: Last time I cancelled this person was kind to me and wasn't mad. They still invited me to other things. They are a kind person and know that I struggle sometimes.
