Are We Thriving or Just Surviving Online?

Hello everyone,

When was the last time you had a real conversation without being distracted by your phone? We are all glued to our phones, iPads, right? Whether it is keeping up with our friends or checking work-related emails, or just diving down endless internet rabbit holes, our lives are basically spent online now. Indeed, it is so cool in so many ways, but does anyone else also feel drained by it sometimes?

Like, that twitchy feeling when you haven't checked your phone in five minutes? Or trying to recall, "what day is it?" fog after scrolling through social media feed for way too long? And trying to actually relax without feeling like you are missing out on something important online? That is the digital overload thing hitting us hard, and it is messing with our heads. As we celebrate May as Mental Health Awareness Month, let's take a moment today to reflect and discuss digital well-being.

Let's get real about how this constant connection is making us feel:

  • Constantly on Edge: That little red notification bubble can feel like a demand, right? The thought to check what it is and check to find out someone's perfect life moment, and feeling anxious how own life isn't great.
  • Negatively affecting sleep pattern: That screen light can be sneaky as it messes with our sleep, leaving us feeling sleep-deprived. And when we are tired, everything else – our mood, our focus – just isn't great.
  • Attention Span of a Goldfish: Are you able to recall the times when we could actually focus on one thing for more than five seconds? Now it feels like our brains are trained to jump from notification to notification, endless scrolling, and making it impossible to get interested in anything.
  • Connected but feeling lonely: That is a weird but common feeling these days. As we may have a handful of "friends" online, but still feel totally lonely. All those digital chats don't always replace real, face-to-face connection, and that can feel isolated.

So what can we do? I want to know what you are thinking. What are your biggest struggles with staying mindful online? What little wins have you had in finding a healthier balance? Let's share, discuss and help each other out to practice digital well-being.

@ASilentObserver

Good topic ...

     Phones and devices and being online is a tool ... by itself does nothing but it is how we use it. Example phones go to any public place like airport and all checking phones or looking for things etc.

I do not do it normally BUT find myself pulling it out and sort of looking like mirroring a behavior.

I tell myself  it is so I am not the odd person.. just observing the situation. Some people use a phone and keeping head down as a shield like they are invisible to others. conveying "I do not converse, I am too engaged in whatever is on a phone".  Same people complain about having few friends or people to talk to.

    My phone is not out of pocket or bag while at restaurants or waiting rooms etc I am present in the moment,  smile at babies and toddlers, notice things around me  ....... it is a conscience Choice.   Phones have do not disturb or sleep mode features...... again a choice to use such features.

Online is a tool to get information quickly   but as a tool it is only as good as the user's choices.

Being able to shut off  instead of looking for what everyone else seems to be doing or posting.   Many need to learn to  distinguish between useful information and JUNK ... is still on the person using it.

@ASilentObserver

This is definitely an interesting topic to explore. Being online a lot and having so many demands from those little red bubbles and numbers and notifications can be so overwhelming.

I like to try and take the weekends off and go for long walks where I only use my phone to take photos of the beautiful nature.

@ASilentObserver  phones are called 'cell' phones for a reason, they imprison you.

And yes there needs to be a balance cause just like most things the internet is addictive. Though for me it's a life line💖 I don't leave my home, and I'm limited on what I can do because of disabilities. But I only use this one site and I still try to balance spending time on here 💖 I do gentle exercises every day with my carers, this time of year I love to go sit outside and watch the sunrise. I do art and crafts most days and always make time to play with my pets💖 so I think I balance my time on here pretty well most days 💖 but like on bad days and when I'm ill or in a lot of pain then I spend a bit to much time here, that's what I meant about this site being my life line 💖💖

That's a very valid point that the internet and Cups can be a lifeline for many 💜 It sounds like you've got a good balance though Tiny 🥰🫂
