Sharing: A Balancing Act of Vulnerability and Strength

Hi everyone, I hope this holiday you are being easy on yourself and get all the comfort and support you need.

A couple of days ago, I was talking to a friend and they shared how they want to feel accepted but also don’t want others' pity. They do want to feel cared for, comforted, and heard but at the same time feel trapped not to share because they don’t want to be a burden on anyone. That was a great reflection by them and I appreciate them for sharing it with me because this post is dedicated to discussing vulnerability.

We've all been there. The storm rages within, thoughts swirling like dark clouds. Something heavy sits on our chests, we yearn to share, but fear grips us. We want to share, to unload the weight, but we crave empathy, not sympathy, but the line between the two feels impossibly thin.

This internal conflict between vulnerability and fear is a sign of being human, a journey we all navigate in different ways. But here's the thing: vulnerability is not about seeking sympathy or pity, it is about finding a connection. It is about peeling back the layers and whispering, "This is me, scars and all." In those raw moments, we offer each other a glimpse of being human with emotions & experiences, woven with threads of joy and sorrow, strength and vulnerability.

So the key question is how do we share without being consumed by the fear of pity? And here are some points based on the experiences of others and mine.

When you share anything, just focus on the intention, not the outcome. Thoughts of the outcome can be scary. Your goal is not to garner pity, it is to connect and share. Share because you need to be heard, not because you need validation. Share what you can, you do not have to share all at once. You can break into small shares and start from anywhere and just go from there.

Share your struggles not as an act to garner attention, but as a story and experiences of your resilience and attempts. You are trying and that counts most during tough times. When you share, frame your vulnerability in terms of reflection and growth. Vulnerability is not your weakness. It is the courage to be real, to be seen, and to take your step to share what you going through.

Share your emotions with a focus on connection, not consolation. When you share to connect and tell your experience, you forge this meaningful bond with others in the sense that we are all in this together without making anyone feel less or more. Treating each other with respect and cherish the moment of simply sharing.

.But, sharing is even not that easy if we don’t know with whom to share. Right? So, find your own safe space. They can be a specific person with whom you feel comfortable already, a community where you feel like you can rely, or simply a journal or venting box where you know your words will not be judged and you can be you while opening up and sharing. Everyone has their way and you can have yours. It does not have to be perfect and it does not have to be readily available. You can simply get started and from there you can build it as you find ways to better it.

So, if you are on the fence about sharing, remember: that your story matters, and your experiences are valid. It deserves to be heard, not to look weak or anyone’s judgment or pity, but for the empathy and connection it can bring. And when you finally share, don't be surprised if you find your voice resonating with more hearts than you ever imagined.

Share your thoughts, your stories, your struggles. And please know here vulnerability is not judged, but celebrated. We appreciate you and are here with you.

A couple quotes that really resonate with me, for myself, and when thinking about our community:

"The strongest and most courageous people I know are not afraid to love, to lose, to be vulnerable, to fail. Because they know that to live is to risk. To feel everything that life has to offer. The good, the bad, the joy, the pain. They know that by facing their fears, they are living a real and authentic life." - Kristen Stewart

“Vulnerability is not winning or losing; it’s having the courage to show up and be seen when we have no control over the outcome. Vulnerability is not weakness; it’s our greatest measure of courage.” - Brené Brown

@ASilentObserver Thanks for a really thoughtful post Obs. Sharing and being vulnerable can definitely take practice but so often it leads to finding people that connect with our story and can relate and show empathy for things that we have been through/going through. 💙

@ASilentObserver um, I may be the opposite, when I'm feeling down sometimes I go in the chat rooms on here. Say hello. People ask how I am and I reply. "I'm wearing my dress of self pity today, please feel sorry for me"

It's pretty much straight to the point me thinks 😁🎅

Me in my armor, shielded from head to toe. I stand with my shield in hand, Watching and waiting, knowing that the fiery darts of warfare are coming my way. Not a warrior by choice but rather by need. The enemy mostly attacks in the stillness of the night. Afraid I am, yet I stand waiting and watching.

There are voices in the distance., are they friends or foes? No worries, you have your shield in hand; you are strong. Even standing all alone, your courage beams forth to light up the night. So I don't have to fear, There are warriors coming from every direction to help you win your war.

Hello, Obs! Thank you for sharing such a heartfelt and genuine post. It's clear that vulnerability is a topic close to your heart, and your words beautifully capture the internal struggle many of us face when it comes to opening up and seeking connection.

I completely resonate with the idea that vulnerability is not about seeking pity or sympathy. It's about finding that raw, authentic connection with others, where we can share our stories, scars, and triumphs. It's in those moments of vulnerability that we truly show our humanity, with all its complexities and emotions.

To be honest, you've provided some wonderful insights on how to navigate the fear of pity and share without losing the essence of what vulnerability truly means. Focusing on intention rather than outcome is a powerful reminder. It allows us to detach from the fear of judgment and instead focus on the connection and understanding we can foster through sharing our experiences.

I can confidently say that breaking our stories into smaller, manageable pieces is a great approach, and it empowers us to share at our own pace. We can choose what feels right to share and gradually open up more as we build trust and comfort.

Another thing is that highlighting our struggles as stories of resilience and attempts for growth is a beautiful perspective. It reframes vulnerability as a strength and reminds us that it takes courage to be real and seen.

Your advice on sharing emotions with a focus on connection is spot on. It's about creating a space where we can all relate and support each other without making showing hints of inferiority or superiority. By treating each other with respect and cherishing those moments of sharing, we foster a sense of belonging and understanding.

And you're absolutely right, finding a safe space to share is essential. Whether it's a trusted person, a supportive community, or even a personal journal, having that outlet where we can be our authentic selves can improve our emotional well-being. It's about finding what works for us individually and allowing ourselves the freedom to express without judgment.

Your encouragement to share, knowing that our stories matter and our experiences are valid, is incredibly uplifting. Vulnerability, when embraced, has the power to touch hearts and create connections beyond what we could imagine.

So, thank you again for this compassionate post! We appreciate you and are here to stand alongside you on this journey of embracing our shared humanity! 😁💙
