What are emotions for? In short, our emotions serve to direct us at the time of an impasse or when we need to make decisions that are too important to act only using our perception of the moment (as in cases of mourning, imminent danger, situations involving family members, etc.). Each emotion experienced by us, makes us make certain decisions, having a good emotional intelligence helps in the way we act in a specific situation.
With the advent of technologies, scholars are now able to understand different emotions, understand physiological details and how each emotion can have different types of responses, such as:
> The emotion that causes the most biological changes in our body is happiness. When we are happy there is an inhibition of negative feelings and an increase in the energy that exists, thus decreasing thoughts of concern, for example. The physiological changes that can be noticed are tranquility, which helps the body to recover stimuli caused by disturbing emotions. In addition to relaxation, the enthusiasm to perform tasks that may appear and increased willingness.
> In the case of fear, blood flows to the muscles, such as those in the legs, which can help escape in certain situations. At the same time, even if for a short moment the body remains paralyzed, perhaps so that the possibility of fleeing, hiding or facing can be considered. Attention remains fixed on what is seen as an immediate threat, so that it is possible to analyze the answer to be given.

In addition to the behaviors already mentioned, emotions can also cause several other behaviors. These are shaped not only by the physiological and organic reactions that each emotion presents, but are also shaped by our culture and life experiences, that is, each person will feel and express their emotions in a unique way taking into account what they have already lived.

Now that we know what they are for and how emotions act in our bodies, we also need to understand how these emotions are associated with thoughts, and thus begin a collaboration between mind and heart.

We can say that we have two minds, two brains and also two distinct types of intelligence: emotional and rational. These two together dictate how we will do at certain times in our lives. In other words, the intellectual part is not able to give the best of itself, if the emotional part is also not prepared for this.

A very simple example and a situation that most of us have probably gone through, is when we study everything that will fall and we need to know for a particular test / presentation, we have total mastery of the subject, but when it comes to taking the action to answer the test or speaking in public during the presentation, we feel incapacitated by fear or nervousness.

With that in mind, we always need to find a healthy balance between reason and emotion, and for that we need to know how to use that emotion intelligently. But how?

First, in order for this to be possible, we need to find a healthy balance between reason and emotion and this is exactly in Emotional Intelligence. The individual who has I.E can feel, think and act so that emotions are not alone in controlling their actions.

According to Rodrigo Fonseca, one of the authors who talks about this topic, some pillars of I.E, are:
> Self-responsibility: knowing how to take responsibility for what happens in your life (whether these situations are good or bad, happy or sad).
> Perception and Management of Emotions: being able to recognize and be aware of their emotions and reactions to certain situations.
> Focus: notice the positive aspects of the situations and people around you.
? Action: manage your emotions, so that you can reach your goal.

Taking into account the world we live in today, where everything happens and needs to be done faster and faster, in which companies and especially professionals are charged and pressured more and more, and where more and more people are also experiencing anxiety, panic attacks or even depression, Emotional Intelligence comes precisely to show us how we can act in each of these situations in our daily lives and, also in situations that are outside of it, to show that when we meet, we know our emotions and limits, and with that we can achieve a society of emotionally healthy people.
