HEY EVERYONE! HAPPY NEW YEAR!....

So, for those who are just starting and "New" to Healthy Living and "Fitness", or for those (like me wink) who might have become a little "too relaxed" during the Holiday season, today's Fitness Friday will discuss just getting started in taking the "small steps" needed to getting up and getting moving and (sitting less) ~

11 Ways to Sit Less

Take a stand with these tips to get you out of your seat.

These days, most of us sit a lot—eight hours a day or more, in some cases. Research has shown that sitting isnt so great for us—even if we get in a workout "most days"!!.... Its the "long stretches" of sitting that are "most harmful".

Aim to get out of your seat

Its easier than you might think! First, try to notice your sitting time over a few days or a week. Write down when/where you sit for more than 30 minutes at a time. Do this on one workday and one non-workday. That can make you more aware of when and where youre sitting too long without getting up. Try any of the ideas here, and take a stand!

At home:

Set an alarm on your smartphone to remind you to get up and walk every 30 minutes.

Stay on your feet while watching TV, and use the time to iron clothes, lift weights, or even march in place!

Be inefficient! Take the laundry up the stairs in a few trips instead of one, wash dishes by hand instead of putting them in the dishwasher, use a watering can instead of the hose, and so on.

(TIP): Change into your active clothes as soon as you get home. Its harder to blow it off if youre already in your workout clothes.

At work:

Set an hourly alarm on your phone or computer to remind yourself to get up and walk for five minutes.

Instead of calling or emailing a co-worker, walk over to their workspace —or make it a walking meeting!

Send documents to the farthest printer; store your lunch in a more remote fridge, use the restroom on another floor—you get the idea.

Do squats while reading documents.

Out and about:

Park in the farthest spot in the shopping center.

Use the walk-up ATM instead of the drive thru.

Cheer your kid's soccer team as you pace the sidelines, not while plunked in a chair.

Waiting for a table? Stand at the bar or foyer rather than sitting. If you're standing, you're more likely to move around!

WHAT ACTIONS ARE YOU TAKING TO "SIT LESS" IN THE NEW YEAR AHEAD?!..... DO YOU CURRENTLY DO ANY OF THESE LISTED ABOVE?! .....IF SO WHICH ONES?! DO YOU DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAN LISTED? IF SO, SHARE!!

I wear a Fitbit that "buzzes" me 10 minutes before the next hour, to get up and get moving if I've been in-active that hour. Its really motivating and reminds me to get up and move If I've been sitting too long on the computer or watching Tv.. which can be an easy thing to do.
