We Are Not Our Diagnoses

This came out of, I would see someone around, ask how they were. They would look downcast, say they had terrible news.

"I just found out I'm schizophrenic."

"I can't believe it!! I'm bipolar!"

And they would be distraught so I would stop say, what's your name?

"Ken."

"Ok Ken what is something you like doing?"

They wouldn't want to answer, finally say, well I like gardening. Then tearful accusations are you messing with me???

I would say not at all. Hi, today I met Ken the gardener!!

And they would stop say....that's right. My name is Ken and I like gardening!!

So in this thread please answer the following questions:

1. What is your 7 cups name?

2. What is something you like doing?

I love this so much! You explained it so so well!

It makes a lot of difference with how we speak for and to ourselves, and/or allow others to do that for us!

Instead of "I'm depressed" it could very well be rephrased as "I'm struggling with depression." and similar as you suggested, because yes, you'll always be more than what your diagnosis tells you, there's always more to you than what you're struggling with and/ or the world tells you you are!

So important to not be confined within labels. Some labels might help one feel like they belong to something and could finally understand something better using that label, but that label isn't *you* and you're too magnificent to ever be limited or defined in any way!

To speaking more mindfully~ starting with ourselves!🌻

Another thing that helped me was realizing that while my diagnosis are extremely difficult, but noting that it will ebb and flow throughout my life gave it less power. Will I have another panic attack? Will I feel hopeless? Will I have an OCD spiral so bad I break down crying?

Maybe. Probably. I guess? But at the end of the day, it gets easier and easier overall and I’m learning how to deal with it. And every day I become more and more myself. I was able to sit and watch TV and feel like a person again.

I also just found out that I really love yoga and sewing. Who knew?

For me, it was the opposite I didn't know about my learning disability technically until high school and I just had a hard time accepting it until someone called it a diff ability and it stuck. My vision impairment was easier for me to accept though. Nice post. Feel free to ask questions
