@JackieMan
I am just adding myself to this tread so i can see the answers. All of my hobbies are best done alone.
@Gettingbettertoday I am glad you replied
@JackieMan I'm interested in the thread.
@Gettingbettertoday
I feel the same way! Though sometimes even some solitary hobbies can be enjoyed with other people in some ways, like I prefer to read alone but I also enjoy talking about what I thought about the book with others.
@ArianKae have you ever joined a book club?
@conscientiousWheel4169
I have! Though admittedly I haven't had the best experiences with them, I know they are great for many other people.
The first one I felt a bit out of place at the time. I was by far the youngest there at ~17 while others were mostly in their 30's. They tried to make me feel welcomed but I ended up abandoning it after only attending a few sessions. Maybe if I was more confident I would have taken advantage of the opportunity, they did all kinds of fun writer workshops, game nights and competitions.
The second one I went to it was very loosely organized and held at a library. There wasn't a host to guide conversation and only 2 other people showed up. We were all really awkward and shy teenagers and mostly just stayed at opposite corners of the room quietly until our parents came to pick us up.
The third one was at my college and I felt like it was just a bit too... cliquey? Most of them had known each other since high school. Lots of inside jokes being made that just went over my head and instead of people trying to include me in on the fun they just brushed it off that I wouldn't get it. Felt like they didn't really want me there so I never came back for another meeting.
I would like to try again though, this was years ago and I'm sure things are different now that I'm an actual adult.
@Gettingbettertoday same here! Let me know if you figure something out.
Online gaming, going to the gym, and attending concerts @Gettingbettertoday
@JackieMan
I would say sports or maybe join a club
@JackieMan
It's whatever hobby interests you!
@puzzlepieces223
My comic collecting has not introduced me to any prospective friends. I don't think a hobby that is interesting that keeps you away from people or at least does nothing to promote you meeting new people will do.
@Gettingbettertoday
I would imagine it just depends on the environment, a comic collector would probably be really popular at a comic convention for example :)
@JackieMan
I would say maybe sports or a game like chess would be a fun way to meet new people
@VahMedoh01
Do you mean at chess tournaments or is there another way to play chess with new people?
@JackieMan
This might seem like an annoying answer, but I find at the end of the day the best hobby for meeting people is one that you enjoy. My thought is that we want to meet people who share interests with us so we can connect and build a friendship often starting with that first point of shared connection. Many times we will find other shared interests, but that first connection can give us something to fall back on when it's still early in developing the friendship.
@EmotionsListener
Jackie
How do i meet people that collect comic books?
@Gettingbettertoday
As someone said, one place to meet people who collect comic books is at a comic book store, also if there are comic conventions near you going can be a great way to connect with others, might even give you more info on the types of activities others have organized.
Admittedly one growing challenge is so much is online. We increasingly order things online and don't go to a store, you don't meet other shoppers when you shop online for example.
The real point here to me is to do things that are true to myself, because if I stop being me to meet people, did people meet the real me?
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
@EmotionsListener
"The real point here to me is to do things that are true to myself, because if I stop being me to meet people, did people meet the real me?"
I second that!! Being a victim of a past relationship where the other was "someone else" is felt like a lie!
Be you otherwise you're living a lie in my opinion.
@Barltik2065
I relate! I've had similar experiences and felt the same way!!
@JackieMan
(I think, somebody is behind me & intentionally erasing all my answers to annoy me..)
Best way to meet people is Volunteering
@BlueMoonBlackTree
Not sure how volunteering would be different then meeting people at work. I don't really know my 50+ co workers after 23 years.
I can image doing dishes for 6 hours and then going home with no real human contact. Just another pair of hands to help out.
@Gettingbettertoday
When you go to office tomorrow, look into your coworker eyes & say 'Do i know you'. And instantly go back to your seat .. next morning Do this again .. and again and again.. for a week .. and be kind please.. I'm sure 100% sure, you will get to know them a week later.. There is a hidden child in all of us ... You are enough old, if you act like a child... People will accept you more than When you behave like a old, wise, grumpy person..
You work, people appreciate you by paying you
You do volunteering, people appreciate each other by talking, they get to know each other. Because it's common phenomenon among animals, they talk when they join each other, if somehow things have made you this way, you feel hard to socialize, just act like a fool, it's really funny activity, without any reason, fall on ground(like a child), without seeking permission (pickup a stone and throw it your coworker).
ACT LIKE A CHILD, BEHAVE LIKE A CHILD . STOP BEING WISE.. JUST BE WISE FOR YOURSELF.. it is your wiseness when to switch to child, when to become young, and when to switch to old, grumpy person
@BlueMoonBlackTree
That is a very interesting idea, that when you work people appreciate you by paying you money, but when you volunteer people appreciate you by talking to you. I never thought of it that way :)
@Gettingbettertoday
Having done both, I don't find that volunteering is like work, because most people are there for a totally different reason.
It seems a shame to make an assumption about volunteering, before even trying it. Maybe look for something that doesn't involve dishes?
@JackieMan
I think art and people are a natural
@JackieMan If you have a dog, going to the park or even the "dog park" is an excellent way to make first contact with strangers because you've already got a shared interest, and dogs are naturally friendly and more willing to interact with others, less inhibited. When my dog is crunching ice cubes on the kitchen floor that falls out of the refrigerator, it reminds me that he's an excellent ice breaker, in more ways than one.
@miraculousParadise2759
Unfortunately my dog is afraid of other dogs.
@Gettingbettertoday In my part of the world, small dogs compensate by driving loud jacked up 4x4 pickup trucks, blowing that thick black diesel smoke all over the neighborhood. That or they drive loud honda civics with the expensive subwoofers and bang band down the block.
Hey it's all good, some dogs just aren't into the socializing as much, I'm definitely in that boat, maybe your dog is focused on studying, is a bookworm, an intellectual, doesn't need that external validation or is even a little afraid of the outside world of course.
@miraculousParadise2759
What the F are you talking about, Is this a joke?
@Gettingbettertoday Art of confusion, got a little carried away with the metaphor I think, cheers!
@miraculousParadise2759
I liked your metaphors :)
@miraculousParadise2759. I used to be more social. I know it's in me to be around others but I prefer a good book or study time.
@conscientiousWheel4169 I tend to have my dog nose in books as well, my textbooks are a bit dog eared. I'm the same way in that I know I can go out there and connect, hard to find the momentum sometimes. I think 7cups is my connection zone simply out of convenience, if I didn't have the internet I'd be listening to people on the streets, in shops etc. Maybe travel around.
@miraculousParadise2759My dog is not people friendly. But it's a awesome idea!
