Self-Awareness – A Lifelong Journey

Self-awareness is a skill that I used to underestimate, but over the years, I’ve learned it’s one of the most powerful tools for growth. I used to live on autopilot—doing what was expected, reacting to situations without understanding why I felt the way I did. But I started noticing patterns in my behavior that didn’t align with who I wanted to be. That’s when I realized I needed to turn inward.

“Being self-aware allows us to observe our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors objectively and non-judgmentally.” That one line hit me hard. I wasn’t being objective or kind to myself. I was judging myself for every mistake, for every awkward conversation, and every anxious thought.

My self-awareness journey began with journaling. Just 5–10 minutes a day helped me track how I was feeling, what triggered me, and how I responded. I also started asking myself simple questions throughout the day, like, “What am I feeling right now?” or “Why did I react that way?” Over time, these small moments of pause gave me incredible insights into how I function and what matters to me.

I’m still learning and evolving, but now I’m more in tune with myself than ever before. Self-awareness has helped me build better relationships, make more intentional choices, and most importantly, treat myself with compassion.

@gracefulCaramel5758 it sounds like your on a great road of self awareness you've taken some huge steps there 💖 which is absolutely amazing, more power to you💖💖

I have a big issue with self awareness I haven't learnt all my triggers yet and I like to choose to ignore my feelings as much as possible, I know that's not a good way to be though. Hopefully one day I'll learn to be much better in this area, so thanks for being a inspiration here💖 gives you a giant tiny hug 💗

How do you practice self-awareness in your daily life?

I try to practice self-awareness by checking in with myself throughout the day—pausing to notice what I'm feeling, how my body feels, and what thoughts are coming up. Sometimes it’s as simple as asking myself, “Why did that comment bother me?” or “Is this reaction coming from the present moment, or something deeper?” Journaling helps too—it gives me space to reflect on patterns or emotions I might otherwise overlook.

Can you think of a moment when being self-aware helped you change the course of a situation?

Yes—there was a time I was in a conversation where I felt defensive. In the past, I might’ve reacted quickly, but in that moment, I caught myself. I noticed the tension in my body and took a deep breath before responding. That small pause helped me speak more calmly and listen more openly, which completely shifted the tone of the conversation. It reminded me how powerful it can be to stay connected to myself, especially during moments of discomfort.

Thank you so much for sharing this! Your reflection really resonated with me. I can relate to that feeling of living on autopilot, and how powerful it can be to finally pause and check in with yourself. I love how you described journaling and asking yourself those simple, grounding questions throughout the day. It’s such a kind and intentional way to build a deeper relationship with yourself. 💛

To answer your questions:

How do I practice self-awareness?
Like you, I also journal regularly, especially when something feels off. I find that writing helps me untangle my thoughts and get honest with myself without judgment. I also take short “mental scans” throughout the day where I pause and name whatever emotion I’m feeling. It’s become a kind of mini reset that helps me stay present.

A moment when self-awareness helped me change the course of a situation:
There was a time I was about to snap at someone during a stressful group project. I paused for a second and realized I wasn’t angry at them. I was overwhelmed and tired. That awareness helped me communicate my feelings calmly instead of lashing out, and the whole tone of our conversation shifted. It was a small moment, but it reminded me of how powerful that pause can be.
