Communication Skills: Is Honesty Always the Best Policy?

We often hear that honesty is the best policy, and I agree with that to some extent. But I also think there are situations where being honest can be complicated. Sometimes we tell ourselves, “I’m just being honest,” when what we are actually doing is saying something without thinking about how it will affect the other person. For example, imagine a friend asks, “Do you like my presentation?” You may honestly think it was not very good. Do you tell them exactly what you think, even if you know it might discourage them? Or do you focus on what they did well and give them some constructive feedback? I think the way we communicate matters just as much as what we are trying to say. This makes me wonder: Is being completely honest always the right thing to do, even when you know your words might hurt someone? Where do you think the line is between being honest and being insensitive? Personally, I think good communication is not about hiding the truth. It is about knowing how and when to communicate it. There is a big difference between saying, “This is terrible,” and saying, “I think this part could be improved, and maybe you could try it this way.” Both might express the same opinion, but the impact is completely different. I also think listening is an important part of communication. Sometimes we are so focused on saying what we want to say that we forget to consider what the other person is actually hearing.

What do you think makes someone a good communicator: being honest, being careful with their words, or finding a balance between the two?

Good communicator needs active listening skills more than anything else.

Tone matters as well. It is good to be honest, but that doesn't mean you have to hurt someone's feelings.

You can always start positive and say, I really liked the beginning, it had me hooked, if I were you... I would concentrate on the ending, it falls flat, but that's just my opinion..

Also, there can be judgements I've found when you're too honest, everyone has their own perspective, that's fine..

But as soon as you say, Honestly, You should just...... You're more dictating, than helping and that's pushing your agenda, instead of giving options or letting them decide, the best path for them.

I think this is such an interesting question. For me, it often comes down to the idea that it is not just what you say, but how you say it.

When people say honesty is the best policy, it can sometimes be taken as a free pass to say things without thinking about delivery. But honesty without care can easily come across as harsh or insensitive. You can be honest and kind at the same time, and that is what really makes someone a strong communicator.

I usually think about whether what I am saying is actually helpful. Is this feedback going to support the other person, or am I just saying it because it is “true”? There are many ways to express the same thought. For example, saying “this could be improved if you try this” gives someone something to work with, while blunt criticism can just discourage them.

Timing also matters a lot. If someone is about to present in a few minutes, pointing out issues they cannot fix in that moment is not very helpful. In that situation, being encouraging or offering one small, practical suggestion makes more sense.

So I would say good communication is about balance. Being honest, but also being thoughtful about your words, your intent, and the impact they will have on the other person.

@Hope I agree that honesty is most effective when it is delivered with kindness. Being thoughtful about our words, timing, and the other person’s feelings can make communication more helpful and respectful.
