Fairness: Building Trust Through Justice
Fairness is something we all recognise instantly when it’s present and when it’s missing. To me, fairness means making sure people are treated with respect, given equal chances, and not overlooked because of bias or favouritism. It’s not just about big issues like justice systems or workplace policies; it shows up in small, everyday moments too. I’ve noticed that fairness builds trust. For example, in group projects, when everyone’s effort is acknowledged and responsibilities are shared equally, people feel motivated and respected. On the other hand, when one person carries most of the load or decisions are made without considering everyone’s input, frustration builds quickly. Fairness is what keeps relationships and communities healthy. I personally don’t really feel it's too much to do, or that it's too hard to do; it comes easily if our heart is honest and fair by default.
Practising fairness isn’t always easy. Sometimes emotions or personal preferences get in the way. I’ve had moments where I wanted to favour someone close to me, but I realised that wouldn’t be fair to others. It takes self-awareness and courage to step back and ask: Am I treating everyone equally? When I do, I feel more aligned with my values, and others trust me more.
Discussion Prompts
1. How do you make sure you’re being fair in group situations?
2. Can you share a time when practising fairness helped strengthen a relationship or community?

I really resonate with what you said fairness really is in the little everyday choices as much as the big ones. I try to make sure I’m being fair in group situations by actively listening to everyone’s input, checking my own biases, and dividing responsibilities or credit in a way that feels balanced.

- In group situations, I try to make sure I’m being fair by actively listening to everyone’s input and making sure tasks are divided based on effort rather than convenience. I also find it helpful to check in with myself and ask whether I would feel comfortable if roles were reversed. If something feels unbalanced, I try to address it early instead of letting frustration build up.
- A time when fairness helped strengthen a relationship was during a group project where we made sure everyone’s contribution was acknowledged and responsibilities were shared equally. Because everyone felt included and respected, communication improved a lot and the group worked more smoothly. It also created a sense of trust, because no one felt overlooked or overburdened.
