Having hope when trying to achieve goals
The second aspect I found the most helpful and was able to relate to the most was optimism, perserverance, courage, and creativity from domain 5. I believe these are valuable traits to have, and they can serve as tools to help us set and achieve our goals. Next, there was a section that said to add hope to your goals by using your character strengths. That was something I’ve never thought I could do. It served as a reminder for me to utilize my character strengths, and through doing that, I will probably be able to appreciate myself for the gifts I have and what I can do well. As I work through my goals, I know I will experience many setbacks (because I’m working on some pretty major goals right now and I’ve experienced a crazy number of setbacks), but this can be a way to instill hope as I make progress, and when I experience a setback, I will continue to be optimistic and remind myself that this too shall pass.
Discussion:
Many of us today have gotten used to thinking negatively, and it feels like having hope and staying optimistic is an impossible thing. Do you feel like you are more prone to staying optimistic or thinking negatively, and if you are not yet at where you want yourself to be in terms of the amount of hope and optimism you have, what can you do to learn how to be more hopeful?
@Starlit263, I really resonate with your thoughts on optimism, perseverance, courage, and creativity. Those traits are powerful tools in reaching our goals, especially when facing setbacks. I agree that adding hope to our goals by leveraging our character strengths can transform our perspective and help us appreciate our unique gifts. Personally, I tend to lean toward optimism, but I know there are times when it gets tough. To cultivate hope, I focus on celebrating small victories and reminding myself that setbacks are part of the journey.
Your post really struck a chord with me. I often find myself caught between optimism and negativity, especially when facing setbacks. I try to lean on my strengths like creativity and perseverance to remind myself of my potential. I’ve started practicing gratitude and celebrating small victories to keep hope alive. What are some techniques you use to stay optimistic during challenging times? @Starlit263
@Starlit263 I think I do a bit of both. I try to be optimistic but at the same time it can be very easy to think negatively, especially when there are bumps in whatever we are doing.
@Starlit263 Thank you for your honesty and insight—this really spoke to me. I love how you connected hope with using your character strengths. That idea feels so empowering, and I hadn’t thought of it that way before either. Instead of just pushing through setbacks, it’s about leaning into what makes us strong in the first place. That really shifted my perspective.
To answer your question, I’ve definitely had times where negative thinking felt like my default, especially when things weren’t going as planned. But over time, I’ve learned that hope isn’t about denying the struggle—it’s about believing that something good can still come out of it. What helps me is reflecting on past challenges I’ve overcome, and remembering that I’ve made it through before. That reminder alone builds a bit more hope each time.
Another practice I’ve been trying lately is writing down one small win each day, no matter how tiny. It keeps me grounded in progress, even when things feel stuck.
You’re so right—these traits like optimism and perseverance aren’t just traits, they’re tools. And I think it’s amazing that you’re already using them intentionally as you pursue your big goals. Rooting for you every step of the way!
@Starlit263
I sometimes fall into negative thinking, especially when things don’t go as planned. But I’m learning to be more hopeful by focusing on small wins and reminding myself that challenges are part of the journey.
