Integrity: A Scenario
Learning about integrity during this course has been quite refreshing. I've always tried to maintain honesty and integrity, both as a person and as a listener, but it isn't always easy. Here's an example of what I mean;
Imagine that you've gotten into trouble at work, school, or even on 7 Cups. You've got 2 choices: tell a little 'white' lie/not tell the entire truth about what happened and not face lesser consequences, or, tell the complete truth and get more severe consequences. I feel like I'm not the only one who would consider the first option 😅 and in the moment, it might feel like the best option. However, in the long run, it wouldn't be the best option to take. Why? Because, it:
- Stunts our growth as people
- Potentially causes harm to others in the situation
- Causes distrust with others
- Puts us in a situation where we need to 'follow' a lie; it's hard to tell a lie and stick to it!
So, integrity comes hand in hand with honesty and authenticity -- being honest shows our integrity, our moral compasses, and authenticity can relate to how honest we are with ourselves and others.
Questions for further thinking...
- The guide describes integrity as, "A commitment and ability to act with sincerity, honesty and integrity". How would you describe integrity, what does it mean to you?
- What can we do to strengthen our integrity as people and as listeners?
@Rebekah In the scenario above, I'm choosing the 2nd option. I'm telling the truth and all of it and accepting whatever repercussions come with it based on my actions. From what I have seen, "white lies" are nothing but lies and when one becomes too comforting with lying, they have to tell another lie on top of it. I seen it with my kids. I seen it with people I grew up with in school. Lying, in my opinion, takes more effort and energy than just telling the truth. Integrity is always what I have been taught-- doing the right thing even when no one is looking. To strengthen integrity requires being honest and truthful. It's owning up to our mistakes. It's living by our values and making the decision to try and be the best we can be. I believe this is something we can all try and do but it does require work in our part. When I was younger, sure, I've told lies to try and save my behind but looking back, it did nothing for me. It only made me look bad and unreliable and hurt people I cared for. That's why I try to refrain from it because that's not the person I wanted to be. I'm so glad my past mistakes don't define who I am now. Now I can take accountability for my actions. ♡

Integrity means to me not allowing external factors dictate or rule, determine how you are or change or alter you as a human being. Always remaining true to your beliefs and core values.
2. What can we do to strengthen our integrity as people and as listeners?
We can strengthen our integrity as people and as listeners by obtaining future trainings to increase our skill and knowledge, as well as remain open and honest with yourself to uphold the integrity.
