How to improve your critical thinking skills
Dimension: Thinking
Critical thinking belongs to the thinking dimension of the Inner Development Goals framework. This dimension is about developing and applying critical, creative, and systemic thinking skills to address complex challenges and opportunities.
Content:
Critical thinking is the ability to interpret, evaluate, and analyze facts and information, to form a judgment or decide if something is right or wrong. It helps us solve problems, make decisions, and communicate effectively.
To improve our critical thinking skills, we can:
- Be curious and open-minded. Seek out new information, perspectives, and experiences that challenge our assumptions and beliefs.
- Be skeptical and analytical. Examine the evidence, logic, and sources behind any claim or argument. Look for inconsistencies, contradictions, and biases.
- Be reflective and self-aware. Recognize our own strengths and weaknesses, emotions and motivations, and how they affect our thinking and judgment. Seek feedback and learn from our mistakes.
- Be creative and innovative. Generate and test multiple solutions and alternatives to a problem or situation. Use our imagination and intuition to come up with original and novel ideas.

Hey ThoughtsBubbleExpress,
My field is psychology, so critical thinking is one of the core parts of the industry. When it comes to clients, it's important to be able to critically think about their situations and techniques that you can use to help them. In terms of research in psychology, critical thinking is even more important since research involves conducting your own studies or synthesizing others. I practice my critical thinking skills by engaging in deep cognitive activities, such as reading a research paper and figuring out how the topic(s) may relate to other areas.
@CJHere2Help Hey there CJ! Glad to meet you here. I'm an aspiring psychologist too, Which subfield are you from?

@CJHere2Help Same 😊 I'll be majoring in clinical psychology too, I also have a counseling practitioner certification
Thats super cool! Best of luck in your studies. It's always great meeting a fellow aspiring psychologist :)
Critical thinking benefits me in my field so that I can critically analyse points of view and data and form my own knowledge base.
I improve my critical thinking skills by taking in a wide variety of points of view so that my information is well rounded
@ThoughtsBubbleExpress
As a student, one way that critical thinking benefits me is that it gives me the ability to learn concepts beyond surface-level understanding. Rather than simply memorizing course material, I have found that critical thinking really helps me to grasp concepts and make connections that extend past that of the material.
One way that I practice and improve my critical thinking skills on a daily basis is through introspection. By striving to understand myself better and the underlying causes behind my behaviors and thoughts, I have been able to hone my ability to problem solve when approaching a variety of situations, especially in relation to my education.
How does critical thinking benefit me?
As an analyst, I have to constantly interpret data and provide insights therefore critical thinking is very important to ensure I am assessing different factors correctly.
How do you practice and improve?
Whenever I see people in action or read interpretations, I try to form my own views and assessments of why I might agree or disagree.
I also try to think about my own bias that may be affecting how I interpret something.
