Skill: Openness and Learning Mindset
Having a learning mindset means being open to new ideas, experiences, and ways of thinking. It means staying curious even when something feels unfamiliar or uncomfortable. It helps us grow and learn more about ourselves and the world around us. A learning mindset reminds us that it is okay not to have all the answers. What matters most is being willing to learn.
There have been many times when I felt nervous about trying something new. I used to avoid things that made me uncomfortable because I did not want to fail. But over time, I learned that trying something new, even if it does not go perfectly, is better than staying stuck. Now, when I stay open and curious instead of afraid, I feel more confident and stronger. Being open has helped me become more flexible and less worried about making mistakes.
A learning mindset also means being kind to yourself. It means not judging yourself if you do not understand something right away. I try to remind myself that learning takes time and that everyone moves at their own pace. When I feel stuck, I try to ask questions, explore new ideas, or take a break and come back with a fresh mind.
Openness and curiosity can help us in school, work, relationships, and personal growth. The more we practice it, the easier it becomes to handle change and keep growing. It is a skill that supports us in so many areas of life.
Questions for you:
When was the last time you tried something new and learned from it?
What helps you stay open when you feel stuck?
I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Let’s keep learning together.

Such a great and useful skill to grow... I'm very familiar with that feeling of inertia and overthinking when trying to decide whether I should attempt something new or risk making a move. Taking thoughtful, calculated risks are the best way build confidence and create opportunities to grow. Definitely something I'm still learning to do!
I remember a time I was very impressed and influenced by a few coworkers that got into running and were doing a half-marathon. I myself was not a runner, but wanted to stay open to the idea of it so I started very small and really got motivated by reaching small weekly goals and being very proud of my ability to adapt to the increase in training. I built a great deal of self-trust in myself and eventually was able to sign up for a half marathon and completed it! It was a surreal experience to look around and feel a part of something I never considered possible.
What helped me stay open when I felt resistance was accepting I wouldn't always be up for the training, that life would get in the way, that there would be bad runs, bad weather, bad moods but to keep showing up for myself regardless. To take action first and then the motivation will show up. It's usually not the other way around for me so just accepting that fact helps a lot.
Openness and curiosity can be applied to so many different aspects of life so I'm glad you brought this up. It's a much-needed reminder for me!

What helps you stay open when you feel stuck?
Great question. When I feel stuck, what helps me stay open is shifting from judgment to curiosity. Instead of thinking “I should have figured this out by now,” I ask myself, “What might this be trying to show me?” That small mindset shift helps me stay flexible and willing to explore new perspectives.

Hi, The last time I tried something new was a few months ago, I started my own business and I have been learning what it takes to be a business owner.
When I feel stuck I like to read. That typically helps me to get unstuck.
1. I haven't tried anything new in a while because of my busy schedule, but the last time I learned something new was a couple months ago and I learned how to code for my statistics class.
2. remembering to not worry myself with things i cannot control.
@nicolka2004 I can really relate to what you’re saying. The last time I tried something new was trying to draw and at first, I was really nervous about failing. But I learned so much just by trying and reflecting, even if it didn’t go perfectly.
