Course 1, Discussion 4: System vs Goals
Hello Leadership Crew!
Welcome to our 4th discussion in this first course. In today's discussion, we will be talking about systems vs. goals.
To start, please read this post here and watch this video.
The basic argument here is that having a system is better than having a goal. A system is a way of behaving that helps you move towards accomplishing something. A goal is usually and end state that happens after you have accomplished something. I think eating healthy is a good example. A goal might be to lose 10 pounds. In this case, you feel kind of bad about yourself until you hit that goal; and then, once you hit it, you kind of lose the purpose because the goal has been reached. If you relapse and gain wait again, then you fall back into feeling bad about yourself again. Contrast this with a system of eating healthy.
A system might include things like: having a big glass of water prior to each meal; eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts; not eating after 9pm; and/or doing some level of intermittent fasting. You wouldn't integrate all of these new healthy eating behaviors at once. Instead, you'd gradually introduce one and then another and then another over whatever period of time makes sense. The system enables you to continuously get healthier and healthier. You will eventually reach the goal, but it'll be the byproduct of eating healthy.
This also has implications for 7 Cups as well. We might have goals of having a certain amount of group support messages or 1:1 messages. Those are fine goals to have, but we mostly want to create a system of support where people care for one another and then the natural result is an increased number of messages.

What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
A key system which I need to set up in my life is by showing consistency in whatever I'm doing
What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
Discipline
Motivation and a
Never give up attitude
@Dorcas00
Consistency is a good one! It helps build good habits. Thanks for the inspiration i think i will definitely apply that to my daily mantra when setting up systems for successs.
A key system I want to set up is a balanced life. I can do this by working to build rest (both physical and mental) into my schedule, adding breaks that support my life across different domains (social, work, education, etc), and working towards physical balance (such as building in time to get exercise when I'm working at my desk, so I'm not sitting for hours straight).
@WillingToHelpU that sounds great! So proud of you for building this system for yourself! 💕

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
I need to study at least 3 hours a day. Exercise for at least 10 minutes. Finish my daily homework and be caught up in everything we learn in school.
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
Dedication and consistency are key mindsets to gradually grow a new system in my life
I would have a routine in my head, what subjects I would study during those 3 hours, I would exercise during a study break and do my homework daily and revise everything I have learned that day to refresh my memory.
A key system I could incorporate into my life would be to practice a healthier lifestyle, including eating healthy, exercise and stress reduction.
Three behaviors I could implement would be to exercise three times a week, eliminate junk food, and practice yoga twice a week.
@Maebyb
Hey there! We both essentially share the same system in common. I wish you all the very best on your journey of implementing those behaviours and establishing a healthier lifestyle. You got this!

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
I am in need of developing a fitness system. Not only will it help me to develop greater physical strength, endurance and health, but it will also improve my mental well-being significantly.
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
1. Engaging in yoga in the morning - Doing a light/low-impact workout which involves simple stretches and breath work can allow me to release tension, exhaustion and stress, helping me to set a good mood for the day.
2. Eating well-balanced meals - This involves eating significant portions of nutritious foods such as proteins, fruits, vegetables, carbohydrates, etc, to obtain the nutrients my body needs to be healthy.
3. Prioritizing 8 hours of sleep - It is essential to establish a proper routine that facilitates getting 8 hours of sleep each night because being well-rested allows me to feel revitalized and improve my mental and physical health.
After implementing the behaviours described above, I can gradually develop my fitness system.
The key system in life is to worry less about the little things and optimize my time more effectively.
The three things I can do is:
Decide if worrying will help my situation?
Prioritize most important things to do first.
Find the positives in every day.

@Moonstar2345 sorry, l meant to say without backsliding.
@Moonstar2345
You’ve outlined such a strong foundation for building lasting success! Focusing on the system rather than just goals is a powerful mindset shift, and your three behaviors show you're already on the right track. I love how intentional and adaptable your approach is—especially with the weekly review, which helps you grow consistently without getting stuck. You've got this!
Key System to Set Up in My Life:
A key system I need to set up in my life is a daily productivity and self-care system. This system will help me balance my responsibilities, such as work and personal growth while maintaining my mental and physical health.
3 Behaviors to Gradually Grow This System:
Time Blocking for Priorities
- Dedicate specific blocks of time each day for focused tasks like working and relaxation.
- Start with one major task in the morning and add more time blocks gradually over a few weeks.
Implementing a Morning Routine
- Begin each day with consistent, positive habits like drinking a glass of water, stretching for 5 minutes, and journaling intentions for the day.
- Introduce one new element at a time and adjust as needed for sustainability.
Weekly Reflection and Planning
- Set aside 15-30 minutes every Sunday to review progress and plan tasks for the upcoming week.
- Focus on what went well and what needs improvement, and prioritize areas for growth.
By focusing on these behaviors, I’ll create a system that encourages continuous progress and adaptability rather than being tied to rigid goals that might feel limiting or discouraging. This approach will help me develop habits that naturally lead to long-term success and fulfillment.
