Course 1, Discussion 4: System vs Goals

Hello Leadership Crew!

Welcome to our 4th discussion in this first course. In today's discussion, we will be talking about systems vs. goals.

To start, please read this post here and watch this video.

The basic argument here is that having a system is better than having a goal. A system is a way of behaving that helps you move towards accomplishing something. A goal is usually and end state that happens after you have accomplished something. I think eating healthy is a good example. A goal might be to lose 10 pounds. In this case, you feel kind of bad about yourself until you hit that goal; and then, once you hit it, you kind of lose the purpose because the goal has been reached. If you relapse and gain wait again, then you fall back into feeling bad about yourself again. Contrast this with a system of eating healthy.

A system might include things like: having a big glass of water prior to each meal; eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts; not eating after 9pm; and/or doing some level of intermittent fasting. You wouldn't integrate all of these new healthy eating behaviors at once. Instead, you'd gradually introduce one and then another and then another over whatever period of time makes sense. The system enables you to continuously get healthier and healthier. You will eventually reach the goal, but it'll be the byproduct of eating healthy.

This also has implications for 7 Cups as well. We might have goals of having a certain amount of group support messages or 1:1 messages. Those are fine goals to have, but we mostly want to create a system of support where people care for one another and then the natural result is an increased number of messages.

@ElenaDeMonaco

I hadn't considered this as an option, but actually I think this is a really great idea. It would be really nice to feel more connected with myself.

I hope this goes well for you :)

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

I'd like to implement a system of all around health, to hopefully help me to feel generally better and more able to cope with life's various challenges.

✒️ What are 3 behaviours you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

Regular scheduled self-care breaks, moving more daily even by just a few steps and being created more balanced meals for myself for example making sure there's enough colour on each plate.

@KellyBx

I need to work on eating more well balanced meals too. It may be hard at first, but in the past, I noticed once I got over the hump and the beginning, it was much easier to eat healthier. I found that as time went on, my body started naturally craving healthier options such as fruits & veggies, and I was more averted to fast food, fried foods, and extra sugary options.

✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

I think that at this stage in life, the key system I need to step up in my life to help me succeed is a system that provides structure & support to help me maintain healthy routines & habits, in various domains in my life such as physical health, mental/emotional health, spiritual health, social health, and vocational health.

✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

3 behaviors I can implement to help me grow into this new system include daily check-ins with myself in the morning (where I give myself time to plan my day/week and practice gratitude), establishing & maintaining a healthy sleep schedule (which includes having good sleep hygiene), and being mindful of how I spend my time in an effort to have a well-rounded and well-balanced schedule.

Additionally, I want to add my opinion on this topic & on the video we watched. The amount of negativity towards goals displayed in the video (goals are for losers, goals are only helpful in a narrow set of scenarios) really bothered me. I love goals. I think goals are a great way for me to visualize & quantify my dreams in life. Goals don't have to be big. My goal can be to drink one glass of water per day. I understand the point of systems & I agree that systems can be a great way of producing long-lasting effects over time. However, I wish it wasn't so hostile towards goals. A SMART goal can include systems as well, they can go hand in hand. My point just being, that I hope this discussion doesn't dissuade people from setting goals. Goal setting can be extremely motivational & helpful for many, and I wish this discussion included a video about the positives about goals as well.

A key system that I need to set up in life to help me succeed would be analyzing my goals and analyzing how to get there by using growth charts and gold charts to figure out my path. Three behaviors I can implement in life to gradually grow is put myself out there more in areas. I want to succeed in in the future I can also make sure taking little steps to reach my goal each day and doing everything in my power to be able to reach the goals.

@Hope

For me, time management is very important to me on a daily basis as having this ability on a daily basis would help me make the most of each day at work/in life.

3 behaviours I can use for time management is first assessing the time of each difficult task versus a simple task along with understanding approximate time periods of delays in completing a deadline and organizing the tasks to be completed within a logical timeframe.
