Course 2, Discussion 3: High Expectations and High Warmth

Congrats! You made it the second course in the LDP! In this course, we focus on the specific interpersonal skills needed to be a strong leader on 7 Cups, including mastery of communication skills, time management, conflict resolution, stress management and empowering new leaders.

I know if you are here, you have read our values and culture guide. I would like to start off by further emphasizing one value that's required for a leader to be successful here, and that is balancing High Expectations & High Warmth.

Work environments with high expectations and minimal warmth tend to result in companies that are very driven, rule-oriented and risk-averse. The people do not tend to grow as much personally or professionally. On the other hand, workplaces that are high in warmth, but have minimal expectations, tend to struggle. Everyone is happy and feels loved, but not a lot of effective or focused work gets done.

7 Cups is high expectations AND high warmth. We expect a lot from you. You might feel like we think you are more capable than other people have suggested or maybe even more capable than how you see yourself. That is okay. Every person on the team has outperformed and done better than they expected. This is largely because warmth, patience, and trust help people make much more progress than they have in other environments. We have high expectations, but we will provide plenty of encouragement and guidance to help you get there.

@FrenchToast

Having an imbalance of expectations and warmth here on 7cups can lead to miscommunication/ inability to empathize with members.

Having too low expectations can hurt a community and it's ability to prosper via limited motivation.  As far as working with fellow leaders low expectations can hinder networking and ability to gather important information with fellow leaders.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?'

Something that might happen if I have an imbalance of expectations and warmth as a 7 Cups leader is that members may start to feel like their works isn't valued or as important to the community and may start to stop doing their work.

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

Having too low of expectations will impact the community and would cause me to not be as productive in the community and it can cause fellow leaders to feel like they don't have to put in effort or show compassion to others if there's a leader not reminding them the importance of looking out for others.

@charmingPeace6655 I think you've made a really important point about volunteers feeling like their work is valued, especially on 7 Cups where it can sometimes be really difficult to cope with the emotional burden.

1) An imbalance as a 7 Cups leader can lead to:

(a) High Expectations, Low Warmth: Stressful environment, disengagement, and burnout.

(b) High Warmth, Low Expectations: Friendly but unproductive, with little progress or growth.

Balancing both ensures a supportive, motivated, and effective community.

2) How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

  1. Community:
  • Low Expectations: Leads to lack of motivation and progress.
  • Low Warmth: Creates a disengaged and unsupportive environment.
  1. Fellow Leaders:
  • Low Expectations: Reduces teamwork and productivity.
  • Low Warmth: Causes miscommunication, distrust, and weak connections.

Balancing both fosters growth, collaboration, and a thriving community

I think I've managed to answer all the questions in the same paragraphs.

Having low expectations but high warmth can be good when people are struggling initially, but in my opinion it can be quite detrimental. Expectations help us get unstuck when we fall into a rut, they help us figure out a direction too. Low expectations sometimes make me feel like my potential isn't seen, people don't expect me to do more than the bar they set. It can be disheartening.

Having high expectations but low warmth can be good at getting things done, but at what cost? Generally, a human one. In my experience, it prevents people from reaching out when they need assistance and it can cause burnout, lower team morale, lower quality, and create friction. I tend to fall into the camp of quiet burnout in these circumstances and then eventually drop whatever caused it.

✒️ What happens if a 7 Cups leader has an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
An imbalance can lead to an unproductive or demotivated environment. High expectations without warmth may cause stress, while high warmth without expectations might lead to complacency. Balance is key for growth and motivation.

✒️ Impact of low expectations or warmth:

  • Community: Low expectations can hinder progress, while low warmth may make members feel unsupported, reducing engagement and trust.
  • Fellow Leaders: It could cause frustration, lack of collaboration, and diminished team morale.

I believe you are on the right track for community, and leadership. Both are very accurate depictions of what could happen unintentionally, and both are preventable.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

There is many things that can happen, you could lose the respect of your peers/members of the community. You could become more of a chaotic/turmous person to be around, an it can make an unsafe environment for those around you.

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

I feel that too low of expectations work create an imbalance of slacking off and not trying hard enough almost as if it is creating a terrible habit of not doing the best. I feel that too much warmth can clash with ego/pride creating someone who humble brags and turns into an attention seeker for pure validation. Which would create chaos of the community, and I feel that now that I know that I am an affiliate leader it shows in the ways I speak with other leaders around me.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

I think if you have an imbalance of Expectation and warmth then you will have reduced productivity within the team, I believe if I had an imbalance then the people won't respect me as a leader.

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

I think the community will lose respect for me if I have these behaviours, it may also make working in a team with my fellow leaders quite difficult.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

A leader with expectations too high may set unachievable goals for individuals, resulting in them going against the leader. However in contrast high warmth may not provide enough motivation for the individuals and could lead to the work not being done.

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

Effects on the Community

Low Expectations: People may grow comfortable, uninspired, or disengaged if expectations are set too low. In the community, a lack of challenge can hinder development, creativity, and accountability.
Lack of Warmth: In the absence of warmth, the community could feel abandoned or alienated. It can be difficult for people to work together or feel appreciated in a chilly or impersonal setting since it can cause loneliness, low morale, and a lack of trust.
Effect on Collaborating with Other Leaders

Low Expectations: When leaders have low expectations, they may not be as ambitious or make as much progress. Additionally, it can foster a culture that tolerates mediocrity, which would diminish effectiveness all around.
Lack of Warmth: Leader-to-leader interactions may turn transactional instead of cooperative in the absence of warmth. This may impede collaboration, candid dialogue, and the ability to resolve conflicts in a constructive way

@lovelyBlossom5344 Hey, reading your post makes me realize it's true if one person acts in a certain manner than everyone else would start to mimic it. You make some pretty valid points here.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

The most obvious outcome will be a poor performance for the people we are suppose to help. The system of high expectations and high warmth is valuable in an emotionally charged environment. If we do not conduct ourselves in the best manner with sincerity to those in need. Then we aren't helping anyone.

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

Community:  Our community needs emotionally capable people to listen. That failure alone will lead to lack of trust and avoidance from those in need.

Fellow Leaders: Nobody wants to work with someone who can't be a team player or lacks care or sympathy for the people they work with. So low expectations and low warmth gets you dismissed from your fellow leader's circle of trust.

Hi @SunnyCthulhu !

I agree. Balancing high expectations and warmth is crucial. An imbalance can lead to poor performance and lack of trust. Low expectations and warmth can create complacency and a toxic environment, impacting both the community and team dynamics negatively.
