Im a marine, and I still experience a lot of transphobic and homophobic comments and conversations among other marines. It always bothers me, but I cant do a whole lot to change their minds. I can tell them theyre wrong but that doesnt mean theyll stop thinking that way. And although its more rare I have heard negative and unaccepting conversations about being ace as well. Usually people dont know what it is and when it is brought up I always have to explain it to them. Usually the response is thats not real, you cant reproduce with yourself, or you just need to find the right person. I like being ace and I dont want to keep explaining to people why Im not in a relationship and not looking for one either. I want to be open and out but Im struggling with the acceptance. Even my mom told me those things and so I dont even mention it to her anymore.

Are any of you comfortable with telling anyone and everyone that youre ace? How did you learn how to be comfortable doing that? Please and thank you!

I'm not ace myself, but I believe a lot of how to handle it depends on what you think would make you happier. Would you feel better with the comfort of not exposing yourself? Or wih the freedom of expressing yourself? There are possible downfalls with both options, so it's about choosing which one is worth it.

And yes, not everyone may understand, but you'd still be free to express yourself regardless what people say. They'll say what they want, but you'll always be true to yourself. Plus, there are people who may be willing to listen and understand, if you explain it. Their support will surely mean more than some people's judgement.

That being said, I hope some asexuals will read your post and give their own opinion too! In the meantime, I wish you the best!

@Alimantra

I am a repulsed ace and I am very comfortable with who I am. I guess the way I became comfortable with other people knowing was due to the need to be able to myself all of the time, no matter who was around. I am a person that is very accepting of others and I choose to accept nothing less from anyone in my own life. I had to decide that if someone wants to be in my circle they have to accept me...if not I don't want them a part of it anyway. I might think I do but in the long run it is just so uncomfortable for me if I can't just feel free to be who I am.

I don't give advice on the subject because everyone is so different. My decision to be me did cause me a lot of discomfort and rejection in the beginning but I am comfortable now. No masks. just people who know and accept and don't try to change me somehow.
