Life with Autism, and being Lesbian 🩷

Hello, Local here.

I wanted to express my thoughts and feelings about something I haven't really been open about with close friends or family even due to my trust issues. But, I find as ive grown older (I'm only 21) I feel like relationships and connections platonic or romantic has been harder for me to maintain or keep. Especially with newer connections. Therefore, im not sure if its all three of my overthinking, my people pleasing or anxiousness. But, I find around people I'm not familiar with even when I am the true version of myself, and build a connection with that person only for them to not care much back when I reciprocate my interest in the connection hurts. And as someone who has struggled their whole life trying not to hide myself, and my expression as the person I am is hard, and I wish more people could at least be more Interested in me as much I am in them. Maybe I do care too much about other people than I do myself. Ive been mainly experiencing this feeling at my job, and trying to build connections only to be pushed down.

Thanks for reading.

@LocalLesbianlol Thank you for sharing this. It sounds really hurtful to put yourself out there only to feel like the effort isn’t returned.

One thing I’ve noticed is that work isn’t always the easiest place to build friendships. In school, a lot of people are on a similar path in life. At work, even people your age can be in completely different places with different priorities, so it can be harder to form close connections.

What do you think you’re looking for most in a friendship right now? All the best and stay safe. 🫶

I agree with what HarborMind said about work friendships. Often in your job or even class you don't really have much in common with people (hobby and personality-wise), you're just forced to coexist and therefore it's better to be friendly to each other and not cause trouble. The friendliness can be easily misread as actually wanting a friendship. The only guaranteed shared experience you both have to talk about is your job.

If there's an opportunity, irl or online, to get into a group specifically catering to some hobby or activity you genuinely enjoy, then that's a better and easier way. You'll find passionate people and can connect via something you both actually like. Please keep trying. Remember, when it comes to relationships, it always quality over quantity, so even if you get 1 or 2 good friends out of a hundred people, it is worth it. Sometimes it takes years for people to call each other friends.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this and I hope you can find your people!
