Coping tools for a bad day
Daily Check-In: March 9th to March 11th, 2026
We all have bad days, and they're bound to happen—whether in the morning, afternoon, or evening. A bad day can creep up on you at any time. Do you have a coping toolkit to help you through these situations?
A coping toolkit consists of having things that can navigate you out of a bad time. You may take a few minutes to meditate, go on a short walk, chat with a friend for help, and use grounding tools to feel better.
Some examples for relieving tension when having a bad day:
Deep breathing exercises: Doing the snake method (long and slow exhaling). You breath in and release the breath with a slow and long exhale. This method calms your nervous system.
Sensory comfort: Using a heavy weighted-down blanket, a warm shower or bath, and scented candles (I do this a lot between candles or incenses to smell the scent of them).
Mindfulness: practice yoga, meditate, and use mindfulness together. I have recently got into tai chi to calm down.
Media escape: watching a funny movie, reading a book, and playing games on the computer.
Journaling: Write down your bad times and implement a way to fix it so it may not happen again, and if they do, know what worked the first time for you.
There are so many tools we can use to calm ourselves down; we just need to know how to use them properly. It is okay to have a bad day; it happens to everyone differently, but how to get out of them is also different. The ways I use them may not be how you use them to relieve tension.

Thank you for all the good information, Pam! When I have a bad day, I try to do something that needs to be done to make me feel somehow accomplished on that day. I release any tension with mindfulness meditation, walking, gardening, and general exercise.

Walking, reading, music, just moving about and mindfulness of breath are my usual options. I strugglr with reading during night shifts and can then spend too much time scrolling.
